That was a different issue in a sense. The original design wasn’t used and a “modified” design was used to support the two walkways. The modified design was far less structurally sound, though it should be noted the original design wasn’t sound itself - and it wouldn’t have supported that load.
You are absolutely correct. Though, at the time, they tried to say it was the modified design which was inherently weak and caused the collapse. Somehow they didn’t inform the general public that neither design was capable of supporting the load that the structure had to bear that night.
Guess they were trying to minimize lawsuits.
