When my family and I were in Italy, my mom used to collect snails in a bucket so she could cook them. She would boil them and then season them with garlic and spices. They’d use toothpicks to pull those things out and suck them down. It was so disgusting, I refused to eat them. One time, I grabbed the bucket and let them all loose in the yard. lol
I could see for a time that mollusks could have a decisive advantage for a time, until teeth and bony creatures became prevalent, but that’s about as far as it goes. The other part seems most dubious.
I agree this ridiculous and strangely I haven’t heard this from any other source.
Sounds like the researcher believes they were able to mussel their way to dominance.
Damn. If only they’d had cocktail sauce or better yet Tabasco. If my son was around back then Frank’s Red Hot would have done the trick.
