Phoenix Two helicopters collided in midair and crashed while covering a police pursuit in central Phoenix Friday afternoon, killing at least two people. Both helicopters were news choppers from local television stations.

I dont know whether to be saddened, or to laugh.
The time to laugh was the day that two WSB reporters, Mark Winne and Ron Sailor, got into a knockdown, drag out, fist fight over which one was taking the helicopter.
Reporters are heinous spume from the nether world depths. Sympathy and condolences to the helicopter pilots to their assignment.
You know, when that lear jet crashed on take off from Van Nuys airport into a neighborhood they didnt spend all day and night on it.
A co pilot even reported got sucked into the engine (that reminds me, I need to look up the FAA report on that one) and at most it was a 1 hour story.
Or.... even potentially worse, schools or shopping malls.
Jill, with all due respect, seriously, these guys were doing their job. They got hired to do a job and they were doing it. I don't see the relevance of the necessity of the job. There are air crashes all year long, from events that aren't necessary, in fact, I think one happened tonite at an air show.
I'm a little surprised at how some on this thread are reacting to this accident. It was an accident, and accidents happen all the time, everywhere, in every kind of circumstance, necessary and unecessary. Rant off. Take care.
i think the reaction to this news story is due to the fact many many people are irritated by the danger posed by high speed police car chases (especially if it is over something minor like a petty theft).
It is even worse when a third party (the news copters) not even involved in the incident add to the danger and confusion.
Certainly it was a tragedy and i think alot of us want to blame the news agencies sending these people out to get this footage. mainly because many people here are fed up with the constant search for carrion that they feed on.
if bin laden turns up in california in a white bronco by all means send every cop and news helicopter out there otherwise its just not necessary
It did happen in L.A. years ago.
Francis "Frank" Gary Powers died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles on August 1, 1977, while working as a helicopter reporter for television station KNBC. The crash of his helicopter was apparently caused by a malfunctioning fuel gauge which had been repaired without his knowledge.
Some may remember USAF Capt. Powers was an American pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down while over the Soviet Union, thus causing the U-2 Crisis of 1960. He was prisoner exchanged for the Soviet Spy Rudolf Abel at a swap over the Havel River bridge between East and West Berlin.
I can understand that.
“Too often a very lengthy chase ends when the runaway driver crashes into some innocent civilian. If it happened to me, Id sue the city for engaging in the chase. The police could ram the runaway driver themselves but they dont want the liability.”
Bad things can happen either way. Court TV or one of them channels had a show about this subject. The good and bad of police chases. The most gut wrenching one was about a police officer who saw some guys hanging out near a car dealership late at night. When he went to see what they were up to they jumped in their car and ran. The local police policy was to not chase them if they had not committed a felony so the cop had to break off the chase.
That morning a young girl was abducted while waiting for her school bus. She was found later that day to be raped and murdered. As it turns out, it was the same guys who the cop the night before had to let go who raped and murdered this girl. The police officer is forever left with guilt even though he knew he was following correct police procedures.
Now a Phoenix PD officer has been shot....critically.

You know this was going to happen sooner or later. the surprising thing is it happened not in Los Angeles, but AZ!
” If it’s that important, pass legislation that allows use of deadly force when a car refuses to pull over. “
What if there is an unwilling passenger? Maybe even a kid.
Good, they deserve it. These worthless idiot media people were bound to have this happen eventually with their ambulance-chasing tabloid “journalism”.
