Good point. It'd take about a quarter of a second to get off three rounds in an M-16A2 at a firing rate 800 rounds/min. If you drop an object from rest, it'll fall about a foot in a quarter of a second. But it's entirely possible he didn't drop instantly (I've seen animals sort of freeze for a moment before they dropped after a headshot). He may have already been as low as possible trying to take cover, etc.
It's just a horrible tragedy, for him, his family, the Army, the nation... Makes me sick.

IIRC, he wasn't...he was in the general vicinity, but entirely out of the loop.
