Restraint? Sure. Oppression? Hardly. {Muslim women}
Washington Post ^ | July 22, 2007 | Leila Aboulela

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates-- The West believes that Islam oppresses women. But as a Muslim, descended from generations of Muslims, I have a different story to tell. It starts like this: You say, "The sea is salty." I say, "But it is blue and full of fish." I am not objective about Islam, and although I am considerably Westernized, I can never truly see it through Western eyes. I am in this religion. It is in me. And articulating the intimacy of faith and the experience of worship to a Western audience is a challenge and a discovery...

Recently, Muslim progressives have softened their stance against the veil. In some countries, the hijab's widespread popularity has made it almost the norm, rather than a gesture of defiance by a minority. Also, the veil has turned out to be a red herring; it has not stalled Muslim women's advancement, as was feared.

I hope that in time the West will come to look at the veil in a different light. It encourages me when a Western woman comments on my head scarf. When one says "That is a lovely color" or asks "Is that batik?" I feel that she has reached out to me. She has seen that beyond the symbol is an item of clothing not unlike the veils that Western women once wore to church, or the bonnets Laura sported on the prairie. That mark of perceived female submissiveness is also an accessory that can be purchased in any department store in the West; it comes in gorgeous silks and beautiful hues....

"Nothing can compete with the elegance, authority and details of the Koran."

Qur'an 49:12 "Spy not behind the backs of others. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?"

Who would want to?

Qur'an 79:1 "I swear by those (angels) who violently tear out (the souls), and drag them forth to destruction, by those who gently take out, by those meteors rushing by, swimming along (angels or planets), and by those who press forward as in a race (the angels, or stars, or horses [the translators added, clueless as to what "Allah" was trying to say]), and by those who regulate the affair."

such elegance, authority and detail.

Qur'an 33:69 "Believers, be not like those who annoyed Moses. Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged." "Allah's Apostle said, ‘The Prophet Moses was a shy person and used to cover his body. An Israeli insulted him, saying, "He covers it because of some defect like leprosy or scrotal hernia." Allah wished to clear Moses of this allegation, so one day he took off his clothes, put them on a stone and started taking a bath. When he moved towards his clothes the stone took them and fled. Moses picked up his staff and ran after the stone saying, "O stone! Give me back my clothes!" He reached some Israelis who saw him naked, and found him to be the best of what Allah had created. The stone stopped there and Moses took his garments and started hitting the stone with his stick. By Allah, the stone still has some traces of the hitting, three, four or five marks. This was what Allah meant when he revealed the surah saying: "Believers! Be you not like those who annoyed Moses. Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged."'"

She forgot to mention stupidity

You say, “Your vest is full of explosives”. I say, “Yes, but it is blue and keeping me warm”.

All of the positive things she has to say about the Islamic world — every single one of them — could be summed up by saying, “There are places where the Islamic world is becoming more like the West.”

I say: If you want Americans to trust Muslims, then you need to get rid of the headscarves.

"...For many women in the Islamic world forced to wear the hijab, it has become a symbol of oppression and submission and in the alternative, for many of those women who have willingly donned the hijab, it has become a symbol of Islamic self-assertion or ethnic chauvinism and in many cases simply a rejection of Western cultural hegemony...."

I say: we shouldn't waste any of our energy worrying about whether women wear headscarves. Hair doesn't matter. However, there's serious and practical reasons for not allowing people to go masked and unidentifiable in public. That's a completely different issue.

When a couple of girls were injured in a raid in Afghanistan, they were taken to the hospital - without a male relative escorting them.

It took weeks of negotiation to get their relatives to agree NOT to murder them on their return.

So tell me again how Muslim women are modest and not oppressed.

BTW - the men held a rally to show America that they had the right to kill their women...the NY Times reported it the next day as a rally to protest Americans killing civilians in Afghanistan.

Everyone should read up on “Al-Taqiyaa” which is the muslim religious practice of lying to non-muslims, which is considered to be a good work.

Here is a good starting link:

I’ve heard this same story from many abused women in the justice system. They were always looking for the good side while they were being beaten by the degenerate scumbag who ‘loved’ them and promised that it would never happen again.
