President Bush yesterday said Americans will soon realize they need the immigrants and foreign temporary workers that would have been allowed by his immigration bill, which was defeated in the Senate last month.
Mr. Bush, in a town hall session in Nashville, Tenn., also refused to say whether he will pardon two U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug-smuggling suspect, saying the prosecutor was a friend of his who made his case to the jury that convicted the agents.
If Mr. Bush was hoping the immigration issue would disappear after his bill's failure, those hopes were dashed, as he was asked repeatedly about border security during the forum meant to highlight his commitment to cutting the deficit.
"The bill failed and I can't make a prediction to you at this point, sir, where it's going to head," the president told one questioner. "I can make you a prediction, though, that pretty shortly people are going to be knocking on people's doors saying, man, we're running out of workers."
Mr. Bush said there are workers who will do jobs Americans aren't doing in the agriculture sector in particular, and without them the jobs will go unfilled.

An influx of new cultures--and their attempts to survive here--does not help the country.
Except for cuisine--the exception because English/British food is so bad?
Are you suggesting that all the rapes and murders being committed in this country are committed by illegal immigrants only? Source please.
Why not Bush?..
.I'm a bit anxious what he can do with 550 days left.... concerning amnesty, NAU, etc.
If this is his agenda....and it seems more obvious every day it is...
...then he will find some way to implement it.
I watched an expose on this very thing recently. The farmers in Colorado, even with the prison inmates who are working on farms there, cannot find enough workers since the state passed new laws on the hiring of illegals. Anyone here offering up any solutions?
And how do you propose to physically remove from 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants from the U.S. at the same time you invite others to come in and be guest workers?
Me too!
Bush,Americans will realize the need for aliens
This is his version of “You’ll be sorry!”
With both an increase in out-sourcing blue collar jobs to developing countries, and the advent of mechanized labor, it cuts out the number of jobs for blue collar workers.
However, the ultimate goal is for robots to replace all human jobs (blue and white collar). Already, librarians aren't needed to check out materials or help with the catalog and finding things. If robots become intelligent enough (and mobile enough), they could replace humans for every job (except maybe artsy ones), and it would be a good thing for society.
That would be interesting....
It has gotten pretty bad. Will agree with you there.
“Never mind. I would vote for the gas pump befor I voted for GWB again.”
I recall sometime back that there was talk of pushing Jeb Bush to run for the White House. I thought it was a very creepy idea at the time. Now I think it would be a very creepy and stupid idea.
These comments are another example from this thread on the complete lack of knowledge concerning American history and the employment of Mexicans for farm labor here. I guess American history doesn’t include teaching on this subject.
Plus, Germany doesn't border the United States (though Germania bordered the Roman Empire....).
You are kidding, right? All farm labor in this country was Americans until around a decade ago? What rock have you been living under? I worked farm labor, along side illegal immigrants around 30 years ago. I also know of farmers and ranchers who’ve hired migrant farm workers for more than 50 years. Perhaps some education in this area is in order.
Similar to ancient Rome and Greece. The Industrial Revolution could have occurred much early (in those two civilizations, amongst others), but with slaves, the machines didn't seem quite as impressive.
Especially in the case of Rome. There were supposedly ideas for machines to help in....(construction?), but it would concluded that if the slaves weren't kept busy, they might revolt. So the plans for the machines were tabled.
German, and the vote could have been about whether legal documents would be in German (along with English?) for the federal government. It was supposed to have lost by a single vote.
While on the topic of being nit-picky (Germanic as opposed to German—what the poster obviously intended to use), the Normans brought French (a Romance language) into English.
Jorge seems pretty ‘strong’ even if you don’t agree with him (which you apparently don’t).
I’m disgusted too, but be careful what you wish for.
