Joint SOCOM and MI Ping
General Downing, thank you for your many contributions. RIP
Bump and RIP for a Patriot.
THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
No, Lord, I guess I aint.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Cant always be a saint.
Ive had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes Ive been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasnt mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
Ive wept unmanly tears.
I know I dont deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If youve a place for me here, Lord,
It neednt be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you dont, Ill understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
Step forward now, you soldier,
Youve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heavens streets,
Youve done your time in Hell.

Prayers for his family, and may God bless General Downing.
May the General rest in peace. Prayers for his family.
After my day with any of the above mentioned units, but he sounds like a heck of a warrior.
God Bless, General, and thank you for your service.
Gen Downing was commissioned to write a report about the Khobar Towers terrorist attack.
One of the reasons that Gen Ron Fogleman, then the Air Force Chief of Staff, resigned was because he vehemently disagreed with Gen Downing's assestment and the repercutions thereof.
Gen Downing found great fault in Gen Schwalier - who took the fall and was disgraced. Many Generals, in all branches of the service, were outraged. It came to light that Gen Schwalier had taken security measures that incredible at the time - to include measures that ticked off the Saudis.
Moreover, Gen Downing gave recommendations that the military should have invested in more high tech security equipment - equipment that Gen Downing had a large financial interest in as a contractor.
Here is but one link to one story on the net - there are many others:

The station chiefs analysis was that the primary threat was Riyadh but other areas were possibilities as well, Schwalier said. When I asked what else I should be doing in light of this new input, the station chief response was (I remember it well), just keep doing what you are doing&
Contrary to what the intelligence community may have suggested, I was never advised of a specific terrorist threat to Khobar Towers, Schwalier told me.
On his own initiative, Schwalier had posted roof top guards at the housing complex several months before the attack. Khobar Towers was the only U.S. military housing in Saudi Arabia to have such tight security. Those guards managed to clear half of the building in the three to five minutes between the time they first saw a suspicious truck ram into the rear gate and the explosion. Without Schwaliers foresight, and their alert reaction, the death toll would undoubtedly have been much higher. As often happens in Washington, Schwalier was not rewarded for his actions, but punished. A hasty investigation, chaired by General Wayne A. Downing, a retired Army officer and former commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, blasted Schwalier for having failed to adequately protect his forces from a terrorist attack.

As a former Brig Gen told me (he is since retired), "The Clinton Administration wanted a fall guy, and Gen Downing provided them with one - Gen Schwalier. The truth is Schwalier went above and beyond to protect his folks, and was cut off at the knees. That is one reason Gen Fogleman resigned - in disgust."
Like I said, I don't know much else about Gen Downing. I know he made 4-star and served his nation greatly. But, that report he authored didn't set well with many people. He could have done a better job in my opinion - and perhaps it could have served as a wake up call to Islamic Fascism years prior to 911.
Farewell to a soldier’s soldier. May God welcome His servant.
Prayers for his eternal rest, and for the comfort and consolation of his friends and family.
haven’t seen this reported anywhere else.
Hand Salute....................two
That man was a warrior. God bless him.
Isn’t the Panama operation the one where the Navy SEALS parachuted into the ocean where they drown? Was their ever a reason found for those SEAL’s to be jumped into the drink?
Thank you Soldier, for sharing a life well lived with us.
Enjoy your special place in Heaven, you’ve earned it.
I had the honor and privilege of working with GEN Downing on the White House Staff shortly after 9/11 and knew him to be a dedicated, honorable man who was totally committed to this country. He was asked to return to government service on several occasions, but refused until after 9/11. Believe me, the boot-lickers and risk-averse that permeate Washington could have learned a lot from a man like General Downing, but they refused to do so.
Written anonymously for the U.S. Cavalry, published in a 1923 U.S. Cavalry Manual. It is still used in modern cavalry units to memorialize the deceased.
Farewell Soldier
There are many opinions here but you know what they say about opinions...To those who either never served or served and have a bitter or positive opinion, listen up from a soldier that has “been there” both in Saudi and DS as well as serving right now. I’m a veteran of the Marine Corps the USNavy and now the AR...Gen.Downing was a man of honor and committment.I happen to be one of those low-level slobs under his command at SOCOM and to those who knew him know better.generals do what they have to do its true, but if you ever have the opportunity to talk with him you would know what a soldier is all about...1SGT “BobCat” Bell..
