Letter to Mr. Zapatero

Letter from the Father of a Soldier to Mr. Zapatero.

Dear president: The sadness that I feel I cannot shape it in this letter because it is mixed with the rage that you have generated in us after the death of my son in Lebanon. My son was a soldier, not a member of a NGO. My son was in a war in which you put us. He was almost a teenager but he was proud to defend Freedom and to represent Spain with his soldier’s uniform.

His casket arrived at daybreak, secretly, as if he and his five companions were unworthy of receiving the tribute of their fellow citizens.

You did not look at our faces when you approached us, as intuiting the rage we had when seeing our children death by the lack of radio frequency jammers in the armoured vehicles that the Spanish military use in foreign missions. You know that for 35 thousand euros our children could be alive. How cheap is the life of the poor man! You spend much more in a single day.

I feel proud of the profession of my son and of the risk that it implies. He died defending Freedom and he died for Spain in a military mission, mister president, although you do not want to give them the decoration that is given in such cases.

One after another, you insult us with your declarations. Do not deceive the Spaniards, tell them the truth and in this way honour these boys, who would have been heroes in any other country.

Life is the most important thing and it should be defended, as well as Freedom. A soldier knows the risk that runs in a war and he accepts it, just like his family. What we cannot accept is the humiliation to which you have subjected us, because it includes all the Spanish society and my son does not deserve such insult.

You should have looked us into our eyes and told us the truth: my son died in a war that for you it does not exist and because of 35 thousand euros.

I hope that life, the society, or your daughters someday make you understand all the mistakes and the damage that you are causing to the humble people that cry their pain in silence. Unfortunately, that won’t give us back our son.

The father of a soldier killed in Lebanon in an action of war.

-----------------------------------------------

Zapatero’s government insists that Spanish troops in Lebanon and Afghanistan are involved in a war, but in a “peace operation”. The term "war" is reserved for Iraq.

Spanish armoured vehicles in Lebanon have now been equipped with radio frequency jammers.

Such ECM devices were already carried by the armoured vehicles used by Spanish troops in Iraq.

Oh for the return of Jose Maria Aznar. Spain lost a good man in that election.
