Possible GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson had two meetings on Rudolph Giuliani's home turf today.
Thompson met with Michael Long, head of the state conservative party and with Steve Cassidy, president of the firefighters union. Yesterday, the International Association of Fire Fighters released a video, criticizing Giuliani's handling of 9/11.
When asked about the controversy, the Tennessee Republican refused to weigh in and would not comment on Giuliani's record on 9/11.
"I have the greatest respect for Steve and his organization and what they're doing, said Thompson. I've read about it but I don't have enough knowledge about it, and I have not looked into it enough to even have an opinion with regard to it."
As for his meeting with Chairman Long, the two men said they talked about national security, the economy and immigration. Long says it's too soon to decide who he's going to endorse, but it sounds like Thompson has the advantage.
"Clearly the Senator is philosophically closer to the leaders of our party than some of the other candidates, but we are wide open on that, said Long.
Thompson has not officially entered the race. He says he'll make a decision soon, on his time frame.
Smart move. He refuses to bang on Giuliani, while visiting with angry former supporters of Giuliani.
I’m not crazy about GOP candidates cozying up to a Union boss, even an anti-RINO Rudy one.
I guess it’s “Hate on Rudy” day. Steve Cassidy already endorsed Hillary Rotten Klinton last year for the Senate, and will probably back her next year. The article didn’t tell any body that.
Fred is turning out to be a brilliant pol so far.
This firefighters union supported Kerry in 2004. The foaming at the mouth Rudy haters would rather side with Democratic operatives.
So, it’s ok with you if Thompson uses liberal democrats to attack another Republican? Just asking.
***************
Do we have proof that he's doing that?
“”So, its ok with you if Thompson uses liberal democrats to attack another Republican? Just asking.””
Why not? It sure seems like plenty of other GOP candidates have no problem using Lib-Dems to attack him.
Hmm nothin’ but chirping crickets from the Mitt-matics, Huntertrons and Paulanoids.
It’s a shame that Mitt had them make that new clipping service web site with the LA Slimes’ articles about FDT.
It’s okay with me if shrewd politicians know how to move nimbly in a campaign. Or a non-campaign like the Fredster has.
OK. Just wanted to know where you stood in the months ahead.
I am not interested in debating...just clarifying everyone’s position.
I am now retreating to my place as observer only.
Good night.
No Thompson should not be meeting with STEVE CASSIDY, a DEMOCRAT UNION boss known by all to be a slime, who tries to tear down the accomplishments of Rudy’s 9/11 response. Who would spit in the eye of any conservative candidate. Then he praises Cassidy the day after he releases a vile video paid for by Union funds. Thompson here showed no class.
Whatever, Rudy booster.
Funny, the Rudy boosters say the GOP has to pull votes from crossover Dems to win. Fred appears to be attempting that here. So what is your beef?
LOL Your candidate is a true man of honor.
As opposed to Rudy, who blames everyone else for his own failings?
Well, considering the topic of this article it does make sense for you to just drive the topic elsewhere.
