Bangkok on alert after Muslim separatist warning
Published: 07.10.07, 07:44 / Israel News
Police have beefed up security in Bangkok after an army intelligence report suggested separatists in the rebellious Muslim south might take their insurgency to the Thai capital, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
Metropolitan police chief Lieutenant-General Adisorn Nonsee had ordered more checkpoints and patrols, especially in Muslim communities, to look for tip-offs or suspects, the spokesman said. (Reuters)

Jibril’s PFLP-GC Has Hand in Gemayel’s Killing That was Carried Out by Fatah al-Islam
Beirut, 06 Jul 07, 16:19
The Fatah al-Islam terrorist group has carried out the assassination of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel as reliable sources informed of the investigation told Naharnet that Ahmed Jibril’s Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command played a role in the crime.
The daily An Nahar said Saturday that Police have finalized the investigation into the murder of Gemayel, scion of Lebanon’s most prominent Christian family and a leading opponent of Syria, who was gunned down near Beirut Nov. 22, 2006.
Citing well-informed sources, the paper said interrogation with Fatah al-Islam detainees revealed that the “executor” of the Gemayel crime was the al-Qaida inspired terrorist group led by Shaker Abssi.
An Nahar’s report came a day after reliable sources told Naharnet that a vehicle used in the Gemayel assassination, a Honda VRC, was stolen from the mountain resort of Brummana in October 2006 and taken to an area in the northern sector of the eastern Bekaa valley where car bandits operate.
Shortly after that, a member of Jibril’s Syrian-backed PFLP-GC approached the gang and bartered the car for a quantity of weapons, the sources added.
The car was used in the assassination of Gemayel in suburban Jdaideh, almost a month after it was stolen from Brummana, the sources added.
The vehicle was later driven to Syria, which turned it back to Lebanon in Dec. 2006 in line with a warrant issued by the Interpol, they explained.
One source said lab tests showed that the car was used in the Gemayel murder and two of the gunmen who used it were killed later in clashes between Lebanese Forces and Fatah al-Islam terrorists in Tripoli’s Mitein street on May 20.
Bodies of the gunmen and samples taken from the car were under lab tests to determine identities of all the culprits who gunned down Gemayel, the source added.
He said all details related to the investigation in Gemayel’s killing and the Fatah al-Islam link have been relayed to the U.N. committee investigating the 2005 killing of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes.

Travel Warning

Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520
This information is current as of today, Mon Jul 09 2007 23:56:58 GMT-0700.
LEBANON
June 14, 2007
This Travel Warning alerts American citizens to the ongoing fighting and political tensions in Lebanon and advises them of safety and security concerns. The Department of State continues strongly to urge that Americans defer travel to Lebanon, and that American citizens in Lebanon consider carefully the risks of remaining. This Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Warning issued on December 22, 2006.
This warning alerts U.S. citizens to the renewed threat of attacks against western and Lebanese government interests by the extremist group Fatah Al-Islam. Similar threats also were made by the militant groups Jund Al-Sham and Al-Qaeda. The Department of State remains concerned about the personal safety and security of American citizens as the fighting continues at the Nahr El-Barad refugee camp. Sporadic fighting also has occurred outside several other refugee camps. U.S. citizens who visit refugee camps in Lebanon risk becoming trapped during hostilities. On June 7, a bomb exploded in the town of Zouk Mousbeh, north of Beirut . This was the fifth small-scale bomb attack in greater Beirut in recent weeks and follows the June 7 discovery of explosives-laden vehicles in eastern Lebanon . Since May 20, explosions have occurred in the Beirut neighborhoods of Achrafieh and Verdun, the Beirut suburb of Sad Al-Bouchrieh, and the resort town of Aley . The possibility of related episodes of violence in popular districts of Beirut and other tourist areas in Lebanon remains high.
The Department continues strongly to urge that Americans defer travel to Lebanon , and that American citizens already in Lebanon consider carefully the risks of remaining. Americans who remain in Lebanon despite this Travel Warning are urged to maintain a high level of vigilance; take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness; confirm that passports and U.S. travel documents for themselves and for family members are up-to-date; and be alert to any deterioration of the security situation.
In a crisis situation, U.S. citizens are responsible for arranging commercial or private means of transportation to depart Lebanon . If evacuation is warranted, only when all other transportation options are unavailable will the U.S. government assist U.S. citizens in leaving a country. This service will be provided on a cost-recovery basis. The lack of valid travel documents will slow the U.S. embassys ability to provide assistance. Further information on the departments role during emergencies is provided at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/tips/emergencies/emergencies_1212.html .
The Department of State considers the threat to U.S. government personnel in Beirut sufficiently serious to require them to live and work under strict security restrictions. These practices limit, and may occasionally prevent, access by U.S. Embassy officials to certain areas of the country. Unofficial travel to Lebanon by U.S. government employees and their family members requires prior approval by the department of state.
Landmines and unexploded ordnance pose significant dangers throughout southern Lebanon, particularly south of the Litani River, as well as in areas of Lebanon where civil war fighting was intense. More than a dozen civilians have been killed and over 100 injured by unexploded ordnance following the armed conflict in July-August 2006. Travelers should watch for posted landmine warnings and strictly avoid all areas where landmines and unexploded ordnance may be present.
The embassy is located in Awkar, near Antelias, Beirut, Lebanon . Public access hours for American citizens are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. however; American citizens who require emergency services outside of these hours may contact the embassy by telephone at any time. The telephone numbers are (961-4) 542-600, 543-600, and fax 544-209. American citizens may register with the embassy online by visiting https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs . Information on consular services and registration can also be found at http://beirut.usembassy.gov or by phone at the above telephone numbers between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday local time.
Updated information on travel and security in Lebanon may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. Additional details can be found in the Department of State’s Consular Information Sheet for Lebanon, the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, the Middle East and North Africa public announcement and A Safe Trip Abroad, all of which are available on the Department’s Internet site at http://travel.state.gov .

“Saudi religious scholars come out against Al-Qaedas use of religious edicts permitting suicide attacks against Muslims”
Dr. Asaf Maliach
ICT Researcher
July 8, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Islamic world is divided in its opinion over suicide attacks carried out by Islamic terrorist organizations, especially when the target is other Muslims. In all of the cases, the questions that arise are, first, are suicide attacks permitted in Islam? And the second question is over the alleged reward given to the person who committed suicide, as some Muslims scholars and clerics claim that those who perpetrate suicide attacks win a place in paradise as they are shuhad?a (martyrs). However, there are those clerics and scholars who suggest that suicide attacks are an offense against Allah and those who perpetrate them go to hell.”

Tidying up the other day, I came across an old newspaper and, flipping through it, saw a picture on page 22 that made my heart stop. It showed Palestinians, most of them young, all of them males, reacting with glee to a particularly heinous terrorist attack. The date was Sept. 12, 2001, and the Palestinians were cheering the deaths of about 3,000 innocent Americans the day before. You can, as they say, look it up.
What you don’t have to look up, though, is the fact that this was before America’s retaliatory invasion of Afghanistan or the war in Iraq. It was also before Guantanamo became shorthand for abuse of the president’s constitutional authority and before the outrage of Abu Ghraib, the U.S.-run prison in Iraq where suspected terrorists were sometimes sexually abused. In other words, the demonstration by Palestinians (in the Lebanese refugee camp of Shatila) preceded most of the usual reasons given for why America today is held in contempt by much of the world.

RFuel Shortage Brings Zimbabwe To Halt

Fuel shortage brings Zimbabwe to halt
By Byron Dziva in Harare
Last Updated: 2:03am BST 10/07/2007
Zimbabwe’s economy was approaching paralysis yesterday as petrol stations across the country ran dry.
President Robert Mugabe’s regime has ordered all retailers to cut fuel prices by 60 per cent, a move that forces them to sell petrol at a loss.
As a result, filling stations across the country have stopped selling altogether and petrol is only available on the black market, at five times the official price.
Without fuel, the entire economy is steadily shutting down.
“It is certainly making a bad situation worse. Many companies will stop functioning,” said John Robertson, an independent economist in the capital, Harare.
A bus driver in Harare said: “At the moment, even on the black market, there is nothing.”
Basic foodstuffs have already vanished from supermarket shelves thanks to the regime’s order that all retail prices should be frozen at their June 18 level.
Inflation has reached such a level that one banana costs the same amount as 15 four-bedroom houses seven years ago. The regime’s behaviour has dismayed many business people.
Masimba Kambarami, the chairman of the petroleum association, said: “Fuel is not indigenous, it has to be treated carefully.
“If you arbitrarily introduce new prices you trigger panic buying, then subsequent shortages.”
Inflation officially runs at 4,530 per cent - the highest level in the world.

“21/7 ‘failings could be repeated’”
“The jury have found four men guilty of conspiracy to murder”
CCTV footage
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”Systemic” failings allowed the ringleader of the 21 July bomb plotters to slip through the police’s net, the shadow home secretary has said.
The failure to track Muktar Ibrahim could happen again, David Davis warned.
Ibrahim, 29, Yassin Omar, 26, Ramzi Mohammed, 25, and Hussain Osman, 28, were convicted on Monday of plotting to bomb transport in London in 2005.
Jurors are still considering verdicts on Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, 34, and Adel Yahya, 24, who deny all charges.
‘Porous borders’
The Conservatives have called for a public inquiry to examine why Ibrahim was allowed to leave the UK to go to a jihadi training camp in Pakistan, despite having been charged with threatening behaviour, related to the distribution of extremist material.
Mr Davis told the BBC’s Today programme: “There is a systemic problem.
“It’s partly a question of volume of suspects. It’s partly a question of volume of people crossing the border.
Referring to the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner, he added: “John Stevens used to talk about our porous borders. This is most startling example I have ever seen.””
