For a presidential candidate who has refused to be pigeon-holed as the "black candidate," Sen. Barack Obama found himself fading in a staged battle for the hearts of black voters Thursday night.
Billed as the "All-American Presidential Forum," the televised debate brought the eight Democratic contenders to Howard University, one of the most prestigious schools in the network of historically black colleges.
The gathering of presidential hopefuls was also a prime time showcase for Tavis Smiley, a media celebrity, and his book, The Covenant with Black America, a New York Times best-selling collection of essays that offer solutions to a variety of problems plaguing impoverished minority communities.
It was the first time a panel of journalists of color, with a black moderator, posed the questions to the candidates.
Close ties shine through
It was clear from the answers to the first questions that Obama's chief rival, Hillary Clinton, spoke with greater confidence on race issues, and in fact she brought many of the women in the audience to their feet when she addressed the alarming rate of HIV/AIDS infections in the black community.
"If HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 24 and 34, there would be an outrage in this country,'' she said.
What black woman hasn't uttered those same words at one time or another?
While it should have been Obama's night, Clinton's close ties to the African-American community shone through in her remarks, offering a boldness that frankly was missing from Obama's responses.
For example, when asked if racism is still an intractable issue of the day, Clinton acknowledged that progress had been made, pointing out that she shared the stage with an African-American and a Latino candidate.
"But there is so much to be done," she said.

...and for Goshsakes...don’t lose the razor again!
You are correct. Furthermore, the so-called “candidates” fail the so-called “community” when they do not attribute the purported HIV infection and AIDS mortality to behaviors that have led to the dissolution of the black family.
If it is true that AIDS is the primary killer of black women age 24-34 nationally, and I would have to see the numbers from CDC to believe this assertion, then it is up to them to close their legs to the scumbags they irresponsibly lay about with, or to at least make these losers wear a rubber. They need to quit shooting drugs, sharing needles, and comforting sexually every addict that comes to their doorstep.
It is not the responsibility of the greater US society to bear the burden of this situation, it is up to black women in the ghetto to change their behaviors. No matter what the democrat charlatans say, this is not a “White America” versus “Black America” issue, it is a black issue, period.
It also is a huge opportunity for Obamarama to feather the family nest with campaign dollars so that he will never have to work again, if you call being a politician “work”. I think he’s scamming the system according to existing campaign laws.
Well he IS 50% more black than other candidates although Hillary is married to the first “black” President.
Black women and AIDS - Hillary seems to be saying blacks are pimps and whores????but coming from her lips....they perceive it a compliment? Really?
AIDS is behaviorally spread, period.
This will get the “guilt ridden white” vote every time.
Good Lord I really HATE that woman!!! (Hillary - not you Gal!)
Can Blacks see when they are insulted?
You are correct, Sir William’s Spirit!
It is behavior, pure and simple. And it is not white America’s fault. It is theirs.
Lord I loathe her. My only happiness regarding her comes with the fact that should she get the nomination, over 51% of the country has said that they won’t vote for her under ANY circumstances.
Oh please, at least give credit where credit is due.
Bill did his part in trying to eliminate this racial disparity by attempting to raise STD rates among whites, by having sex with as many different women as possible.
Do you have that photo of Barack Hussein looking down his nose at Hillary?
LOL!!!
“Hey, man! Where are the hot chicks at!?”
Precisely. AIDS is not a disease, like Sickle Cell, that is prevalent in a segment of population due to genetic factors. Gays in the United States did not have the highest infection rate because they were gay - it was gay behaviors. It’s not White America’s fault that there are more blacks infected with AIDS - it’s dirty needles and unprotected sex. Hillary is, as always, a jerk. Fortunately for us, she’s going to have some big questions to answer, such as (as stated above) - so what did your husband do about it for eight years? What did you ASK him to do about it?
She’s a freekin’ beast!
He has no chance, and will only be a token "inclusive Party" posterboy, and a black-voter-getter.
That's another reason why I've always said that when Hillary! gets back into the WH, it will be the end of the Republic as we've known it. The country will be torn apart along racial, gender, and economic lines. And the Clintons will be the ones driving the destruction, because they think they'll be the only ones left standing when the rubble settles. I don't think they will, because not many of the "old school" of pols will be left after this country undergoes it's next revolution, which will probably be of the Jacobin variety. But they (Clintons) think they will, and that's all that matters (to them).
They are pure evil, plain and simple. People always talk about the “good old days” of the Clintons. You ask them to name ONE THING they did that benefitted the country. The answer always comes back to one of two things: (1) the economy, which Clinton had NOTHING to do with; or (2) the country was “at peace.” Sure we were. Ever hear of Bosnia? The USS Cole? The American Embassy? The first World Trade Center bombing?
Oh, and let’s see.....Waco, in which Janet Reno waged war on American citizens, which in turn caused Oklahoma City.
She’s Lady MacBeth without the iambic pentameter.
