The fact of the matter is, however, that the GOP leadership that we elected was the driving force that brought us right up to the brink of national suicide. The democrats were just along for the ride in this circus.

That's exactly it. Even the Dems weren't willing to commit political suicide by passing this bill without a lot of Republican support. How many times did Pelosi say she wouldn't bring it to the floor without at least 60 Republicans voting for it? How many times did Reid call it a Republican bill or Bush's bill? There's reasons for laying the 'credit' for the bill at the Republicans' feet.
