Heritage Foundation: Reid Demands Vote on Immigration Amendments without Divulging Actual Text

Senate Sausage [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Brian Darling, director of Senate relations at the Heritage Foundation, e-mails:

Someone once said not to watch how sausage or legislation are made. Today especially I prefer to be at the sausage factory.

As if the Senate floor situation could get any worse, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's staff is now rewriting the Clay Pigeon amendment behind closed doors. It is the intent of the Majority Leader to bring this new unread Amendment up without the Republicans seeing the language. Yesterday Senator Reid did not have his massive 373 page amendment ready when he started debate on it and mistakes were made in the initial drafting. This fact was not discovered until Republicans objected to waiving the reading of the bill, and the Senate Clerk had nothing to read. Shockingly, Reid scrambled around, put the floor in morning business for a few hours, and then allowed Kennedy's staff make final changes to the amendment. The language was finally made available around 5:30 pm and Reid "graciously" gave Republicans the night to go through it before moving to it this morning.

This morning Republicans announced that Reid's amendment did not include the Sessions EITC provision in the touchback section, despite the fact that all previously passed amendments were supposed to be incorporated in the bill and the Clay Pigeon amendment. This oversight is the only mistake so far found, yet there may be other mistakes and intentional omissions in the 373 page amendment. This morning Reid put the floor back in morning business and sent his staff off to rewrite the mega amendment once again. Today, "the most deliberative body in the world," is left to debate legislation that they do not have a copy of. When Republicans asked if the amendment could be read once it was written, Reid objected because "it would take up too much time." Reid is promising the changes in the new amendment to be minimal, yet he has yet to allow Republicans to see the amendment, much less to check the changes.

This is a true outrage and shows the extreme measures the proponents of Amnesty will use to pass this bill, without any significant debate, nor any time to read.

Reid is not about to kill the bill - it is a democrat win in a hundred different tentacles. That bill is packed with items that will turn this country into a socialistic state, drain the social security and entitlement programs and will allow us to do nothing about our defense of the borders.

Right - but I fear there is nothing to report. The GOP congress is willing to be bought - just waiting for their price.

Was it Caligula who brought horses in to replace Roman Senators?

We have jackasses and rinos. I think horses would be better.

Do not make any excuses for the Republi-Cons. They all sacks both parties with the fewest of exceptions.

Amnesty is the Republi-Con Legacy...Without their betrayal it could not have happened.

The Presidents Legacy will not be written in the sands of Iraq or Afghanistan but in the Halls of the Senate and Congress and his Amnesty for illegals and betrayal of the American People who worked to get him elected

Isn’t anyone in the Senate standing a screaming about this is not the way to make laws...in secret, behind closed doors and not letting the floor even read what it is they are voting on? I keep asking why this bill hasn’t gone through the committee process where “experts” and both sides can have their say and influence the actual bill. This isn't legislating, it is railroading and steamrolling...this is not how legislation should be made. This is a travesty!

Though I agree there are some .. but not all are and a number have done an very good job fighting this bogus bill

It's not fair to lump them all into one

This is a very weird time in our politics.

What we can’t help but notice is the extreme pressure being exerted by the White House, the utter disregard by so many senators of the clamor of the people.

I agree with Rush - what is the reason that so many are willing to endanger their careers for the immigration bill? Why the behind closed doors deals? Why such statements as “trust me, I have not changed much in the amendments and you don’t need to read them,” by Reid.

There is a bigger picture here and many are seeing that this is not just politics as usual.

Mea Culpa ..

I see their use of the Amnesty bill as a cover, a ruse to hide an attempt strip the American people of the value and power of their Citizenship.

When you keep in mind most elections are won or lost by 3% of those who vote. Once this bill was ‘resurrected” it manifest itself as a coups d’état, no longer just another piece of bad legislation..

n. pl. coups d’état (k) or coup d’états (d-täz)
The sudden overthrow of a government by a usually small group of persons in or previously in positions of authority.

It does not matter who believed they would benefit from adding 20 million citizens. All current American Citizens would lose.

That the Demon-cratic party would attempt this is perfectly understandable.. At the top that is who they are.

Now I am left with the incontrovertible proof that “At the top” indeed that is who the Republi-Cons are also..

So now where do we turn?
