Hi Everyone! I know this is really early, but I thought this would give everyone a chance to make plans & start saving pennies for the trip.
The 2008 shoot will be held May 3rd, at Schwenkes Gun Range (4407 FM 1069) in Aransas Pass, Texas (35 miles SE of Corpus Christi. The cost will be $15.00 per person.
Schwenkes is a private gun range, that charges its members $50.00/year. I met with Mr. Schwenkes today, he said since I seem like a nice lady, he would allow us to use his range. He also said if I would give him the time we will be there, he would close the range to his members. He smiled as he said the following, This range is for members only, some may complain, but I own the darn thing and can make up the rules as I go along.. I am thinking 10:00 2:00. Let me know if you think it should be longer or shorter.
There are only two rules set in stone; 1) pick up your brass and deposit it in a tub at the end of the shooting area, and 2) when shooting at the rifle range aim at the mounds, there are cows in the area and he doesnt want them dead! The maximum target distance on the rifle range is 200 yards.
For our Memorial Shoot attendees that do not shoot, there are lots of tourists stuff for you to do so you want be bored at the range. The U.S.S. Lexington tour is awesome, Padre Island (Port Aransas) is always fun to cruise and Rockport is right around the corner.
Food & fun will follow at Deer Camp South after the shoot.
The trailer at DCS will sleep about 8ish people, if anyone wants to sleep there. If you are a camping type person, you can pitch a tent in the yard or if you have a camper, you can park it in the yard. For those that like luxury lodging, there are several hotels in Aransas Pass and the surrounding area (Rockport, Port Aransas and Ingleside) and Corpus Christi is 35 miles away. To get to Port Aransas you will have to ride the ferry ~ a whopping 5 minute trip (the wait in line may be a bit longer). MAJOR BIT OF ADVICE - - Choose a major hotel/motel chain when you pick your lodging!
The closer it gets to the date of the shoot, the more I will go into details.
Feeling the pinch of living in the GREAT communist state of Minnesota via taxes are ya'?? ~snort
Sadly that trip has been cancelled.
With the dollar in the tank and petrol on the rise it has become cost prohibitive.
What pinched was not having a job after getting layed off at the first office. The funds that would have paid for the trip had to go for rent and utilities.
I’m pleased it was available though...better than the alternative!
“Okay, lady, he’s your deer - just let me get my saddle off him, okay?”

Sorry for being late on my after action report. Sunday I was whopped & today I was pretty busy.
What a great and wonderful time this weekend was!!!
Allegra & I drove down to DCS on Thursday afternoon. Being the responsible adults that we are, we stayed up until past 3:00 a.m. talking and drinking.
Around mid-day Friday we managed to drag ourselves out & pick up all the food & snacks needed for Saturday. When we arrived back at DCS, we were greeted by Eaker ~ showing us his hand where this dog bite me. Later in the evening mylife, thackney and his lovely wife Holly drove over to DCS. After the nickel tour we all headed to “Off The Hook” restaurant for dinner. Shortly after we arrived LuvW & NYTexan joined us, then froufrou and her wonderful husband Rocky showed up. We had some amazing appetizers ~ their stuffed jalapenos are stuffed with crab meat it was DE-licious ~ the only problem with the appetizers was Eaker & Holly would not share the boiled shrimp with the other end of the table!! Everyone really seemed to enjoy his or her dinner (the fried shrimp is damn near a good as my mothers!). After leaving the restaurant thackney & Holly went back to the hotel to crash; LuvW & NYTexan went to check into the hotel; Eaker, myself, Allegra, mylife, froufrou & Rocky headed back to DCS for a night cap. Not one of us brought our cameras to the restaurant.
The following morning all of the restaurant crew met up with us at DCS and proceeded to the range. There was a bit of a delay getting into the range, as the owner forgot we scheduled the event for that day (he had not yet changed his calendar from April to May) & he had to go out to feed the cows. After several minutes of signing a release form and paying the range fee it was off to the range. I stayed back for a while to await the late Freepers, and had a nice conversation with Mr. Schwenke ~ turns out he knew my dad and my great grandparents. The range was awesome. Although we had to share it with cows & a horse. One cow was extremely ticked off that we were disturbing her Saturday. There was a discussion amongst ourselves about the range rules ~ the range owner said we could not shoot the cows, he did not say anything about shooting the horse. ;-) We decided it would be bad form to shoot the horse; although thackney literally scared the $hit out of it.
I left a bit early to start the food preparations at DCS. Upon leaving I was met by Mr. Schwenke and thanked him for his hospitality & let him know how much everyone enjoyed his range. He told me that he turned away six members that wanted to shoot, and after he explained why, not one of them had a problem with the reason. From what I understand he greeted everyone upon their exit, wanting to make sure they had a good time.
First thing to be set up at DCS was snacks! Thank you Tijeras_Slim for once again supplying salsa & chips (next weekend I will use the remainder of one of the salsas to make an amazing omelet). I fried some shrimp that had issues with the batter sticking ~ I was told that shrimp was still very tasty. Along with the fried shrimp were hush puppies, which I am told was LuvWs favorite part to the entire meal. thackney & Eaker were in charge of the boiled shrimp & crawfish. SouthTexas brought a brisket, red beans & potato salad (which was really, really good).
Once everyone was full & happy, we had several field trips. A group headed to the north forty to try to find the alligator (he never did make an appearance ~ at one point he sent a cattail in his stead). Another group headed down the road to visit an evil neighbor goat (I hate that goat!) During one of the evil goat (I hate that goat) field trips we were greeted by a horse, which did not stay around very long but graced us with a loud and embarrassing horse fart.
Saturday evening was just a lot of fun, with great conversation. I really enjoyed visiting with all of those that were there. And I was thrilled to finally meet SouthTexas.
Eaker pictures will be posted within the next few days . . . .
Already looking forward to next years shoot!
great report! too bad no camera’s at restaurant. Funny I always have my camera.. That & my dogs go with me everywehere!
thanks for sharing TheMom! sounded like a wonderful (and fattening) weekend
That there was a good ol’ horse!
Thanks for the report. Texas Cowboy’s spirit lives on!
Was? You didn't send him to the glue factory did you? Or maybe to be made into French roasts and steaks? :)
Nah, he was nice. I asked him to move off the range and he did.
Some horses are surly and stubborn with strangers. ;-)
That is all for now!
Some are surly and stubborn with people they know quite well. I've known several like that. Been bitten and stepped on too.
But the key word is "was". I'm sure he's still a nice horse... for how long it's hard to say, since I didn't look in his mouth, and couldn't tell much if I had. But, no gray in his coat. But he looked a little skinny and awful tired, maybe he just needed a day off from all the loud noises in his pasture. :)
Great pics!
Thanks for the pics and report.
I’ll try to post some pics after vaca is over.
I know what is wrong with that guy in the first picture . . . he does not have on a red cap!
Ping to #773 for pics.
