Are we talking politics or principles?

Politics. This is a political website. If you want principle, go talk to your priest, minister, or rabbi.

Following that argument we should decide our position on abortion based on what’s popular, not what’s right.

Fortunately we don’t do that. Killing the unborn is wrong. We try to bring politics into that position rather than adopting what is popular.

"This is just one example of how the president puts ideology before science, politics before the needs of our families, just one more example of how out of touch with reality he and his party have become," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., told the Take Back America conference of liberal activists Wednesday

And yet another example of how aging baby boomers with ever spreading behinds are wont to sacrifice humanity in an effort to reverse their spreading asses and wrinkled faces.

To give you a fuller answer, it really doesn’t matter if banning IVF is a principled issue for you, because the folks who call the shots in the Administration — like, almost certainly, their counterparts in future Administrations — are never going to do anything that would seriously impair the ability of the Republican Party to win national elections. Attempting to ban IVF would make it virtually impossible for the GOP to win nationwide, at least in the near term.

Was your takeover of FR congenial or hostile?

I can’t seem to separate the two. I expect principles in politics.

That's not how I decide my personal opinions, but it's how political parties set their platforms. If you don't believe the popular will matters in a democracy, then I don't think you get it. Political parties and candidates win when they appeal to a majority of the public; they lose when they don't. That's reality and if you have any interest in participating in political life, you adjust accordingly.

I used to think this was being pushed because some people want to live forever. Adult stems cells seem to be more promising though so....maybe they are just looking for a reason to justify killing babies?

I can’t seem to separate the two. I expect principles in politics.

That's what everybody says. But not what they actually want. People want politicians to agree with them. They respect politicians who stand by their principles when those principles are in accordance with their own, but not when they aren't.

Example: Say what you want about that Berkely-nut Congresswoman Barbara Lee, but she voted against fighting the Taliban on principle. Her principles happen to be dead-wrong, but they're still principles. And she -- deservedly I might add -- gets no respect on this site.

I want politicians who are right; I don't care about principles. If your principles are wrong, then I hope you abandon them and vote the right way, even if you're only doing so to win reelection.

Abortion is a sacrament to many baby boomers. Weird I know, but true in my experience.

We can give credit when it is due. Good job, Mr. President.

Well stated. May I add: Please stop pressing the Senate immigration bill Mr. President.

The Dems are supporting fetal stem cell research not because they care about it, but because most of the GOP is against it, and because polls show a majority of Americans, if asked "would you support stem cell research to cure xxxx disease" say yes. It's a classic wedge issue. The bizarre thing is that if the GOP actually supported fetal stem cell research, the Dems would have no more use for the issue, and you'd see a lot fewer efforts to push for funding.

This is all about winning elections, and nothing to do with the actual subject. If you think it's cynical, you're not the only one.

I've met many politicians, some good and some bad, but not one of them has ever seemed Godly to me. Maybe I live in the wrong place.

and your connotation implies that if in fact ESC’s did cure people of disease then it would be worth funding?

George W. Bush is a nobel and heroic President. We may never again have another President that takes personal interest in the well being of All Americans.

Liberals with their big tent pander to everyone and stand on zero principle.

Amazing how sometimes some Conservatives overlook GWB strongest values on so many issues.

There is nothing to prevent of prohibit private research funds from doing stem cell research...  Of course privately funded research sources typically expect results and thus would be more likely to focus on the areas where research has actually demonstrated some promising results.

And that isn't embryonic stem cells.  Your point is right on the mark and explains why the embryonic stem cell research supporters want to force the government to fund it.
Now watch the libs bemoan, "The President has blocked stem cell research."  No he didn't; he just blocked federal funding of it.  And watch the liberal media latch onto the short title euphemistically used for the bill ("Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act") as opposed to its official title ("An Act to Amend the Public Health Service Act to Provide for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research").
