It’s because these things are not within the sense realm that EO Wilson bases his hilarious claim that if an individual believes he senses personhood or believes he has actually had an independant thought, the poor sap has actually experienced an epiphenomenon...or an illusion caused by the firing of synapses and ongoing chemical changes taking place within his cranium.
