As I recall, Reagan was a Roosevelt democrat. Sure, forty years before he was elected president. Reagan had plenty of time to demonstrate in deed and in words his conservative ideals. Harriet Meirs hadn't. Reagan was governor of California. Harriet had no time on the bench and accomplished nothing.
Bush's actions in nominating her and in pushing amnesty are both inexplicable and despicable.

What I think is despicable is using a person’s good name to further disagreements in which that person is not, and has not ever been involved. Coulter is using the same method the left did to tar Joe McCarthy’s name and for a person who has done absolutely nothing to deserve such treatment. Coulter owes Harriet Miers an apology. I repeat myself from an earlier post-—I hope that Ann Coulter is on the receiving end of the same type of abuse as she has dished out to Harriet Miers. And soon.

Inexplicable!
Wasn't it obvious he nominated her because he wanted to replace Sandra Day O'Connor with another woman. Laura Bush then had the nerve to suggest those opposing her nomination were sexist when the reason she was nominated by President Bush was because of her sex and not her merits.
"I genuinely feel sorry for Miers. I'm sure she's a lovely woman, brighter than average, and well-qualified for many important jobs. Just not the job Bush has nominated her for. The terrible thing Bush has done to Miers is to force people who care about the court to say that."
