Senators Unmoved by Bush Bid to Save Immigration Bill
Washington Post ^ | June 13, 2007 | Jonathan Weisman

Posted on 06/13/2007 3:17:00 AM PDT by conservativecorner

In a rare visit to Capitol Hill, President Bush pressed Republican senators yesterday to resurrect the compromise overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, but many of the senators instead demanded that his administration first show a more determined commitment to border security.

The visit was the first time in five years that Bush had come to the Capitol for the Republican senators' weekly policy luncheon. He and senior administration officials painted the meeting -- coming five days after the collapse on the Senate floor of the tenuous compromise on immigration -- as a rescue session. Bush made an impassioned plea for the legislation, saying "the status quo is unacceptable."

"Now is the time to move a comprehensive bill that enforces our borders and has good workplace enforcement, that doesn't grant automatic citizenship, that addresses this problem in a comprehensive way," he said after the lunch.

Although senators described the meeting as cordial, even jovial, they also said the president's efforts to rally GOP support did not win any converts. "We're off the bill. We ought to stay off the bill for a while," said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), one of the bill's sternest critics.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) marveled at the president's passion and commitment. But, he added: "We didn't expect anyone to stand up and holler that they had an epiphany."

And, apparently, nobody did.

The rapidly decomposing cadaver in charge of our Department of Homeland "Security" made it quite clear that our security is not an issue with this administration at all:

Probably the biggest lie in the letter that we have received from RINO Senator Mel Martinez, is the part wherein his signs off,
“sincerly”
Mel Martinez.

At least GWB and I agree that the status quo is unacceptable. Enforce the current laws, Mr. President.

There’s no ambiguity about Sessions, is there? Of course not. He says let it die. McConnell, otoh, said the other day he hoped to bring back the bill.

If Bush was a Democratic plant sent to demoralize the base he couldn’t be doing better than he has on this issue.

I agree. Senor Bush is doing everything he can to insure that the Republicans lose big in 2008. The man is a traitor.

He told Sessions, for instance, that he plans to show up at a political fundraiser for him, despite the senator’s dogged stance against his immigration policies.

If I were Sessions, I would definitely see that as a threat by Bush - he will doom any candidate he endorses.

I’m thinking of a couple of judicial nominees that you left hanging in the wind as the Dhims ripped them apart and delayed voting.

Excellent point.

I don't remember him showing up to defend his judicial nominees who were trashed and abandoned (or even speaking up for them) and the GOP was even in control of the Senate then. He probably could have made a big difference countering the Gang Of 14 and overturning the unconstitutional filibustering of his own judges! Instead, he politely demurred.

So now he gets serious about implementing his agenda? I guess we now know where his priorities really are!

Did anyone hear Glenn Beck talking about this yesterday? He was saying that he is hearing things from “the people” that he has never heard before - things like “I’m stocking up on guns and ammo”, etc. He was saying something big is going to happen with the American people in the next few years.

I’m guessing he’s talking about R-E-V-O-L-U-T-I-O-N.

You know, I always thought the next civil war would be over abortion, but I was wrong. I am now convinced it will be over this. This literally affects everyone in the country - from the people who lose jobs to the invaders to people who can’t get into an emergency room because of the over crowding to people whose property taxes are going up and up to educate the children of illegals. I think that when Spanish becomes our official language and “Americans” are the minority, enough people will have reached the blow point. But, by then it will be too late.

After the border has been certified secure by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and the employment verification system is in place, the remaining provisions of the bill will go into effect.

I wouldn't trust Chertoff to certify the results of a tic-tac-toe game, much less whether the border is secure.

Thank you for sharing, alicewonders.

Unfortunately, I missed Glenn Beck’s program yesterday.

“He was saying that he is hearing things from ‘the people’ that he has never heard before - things like ‘I’m stocking up on guns and ammo’, etc.”

I suddenly feel better this a.m. seeing that folks are actually ready to act to save this country as opposed to just talking about it.

Gettin' harder all the time to find one a them old Bushbots in here. Could THIS be why?

With Bush fighting this never-ending “War on Terror,” sending more people to Iraq (many of whom are attempting to seal the borders of IRAQ for God’s sake!) and extending duty tours at the same time really bad people are doing all they can to get really bad stuff (chemical, biological and nuclear) into this country (it’s probably already here) to do really bad things (probably worse than 9-11), why in the hell has he ignored borders that leak like sieves?

Bush obviously thinks securing IRAQ’S border and IRAQI citizens from incursion by and death at the hands of murderous thugs is more important than securing OURS.

In a saner, more aware time, that sort of behavior would have produced charges of treason.

Alas, those times — like this country’s greatness — are far behind us, never to return.

The man is either delusional, schizophrenic at best or just plain stupid at worst.

Or part of some plot to alter America forever.

Bush’s name will be mentioned along with Carter’s when the worst presidents in history are discussed.

(Excuse me. Some large folks in ninja outfits at the door...never mind they just battered it down and are...

I own a business, all day long I talk to customers - not just local people - but lots of out-of-towners too. I can tell you, the VAST majority of people I talk to are sick to death about this issue. I keep talk radio on at work & people hear Glenn, Rush & Sean talking about it & they are as mad as I am. The time is getting closer & we must not let it slip through our fingers, or it will be too late. I hope everyone has the guts for what is to come.

Anyone expecting that a new immigration law mandating border enforcement would actually be ‘enforced’ is living in a fool’s world. This president passionately believes in open borders and as long as he is in office we will see minimal border enforcement along the southern border.
