Senators Unmoved by Bush Bid to Save Immigration Bill
Washington Post ^ | June 13, 2007 | Jonathan Weisman

Posted on 06/13/2007 3:17:00 AM PDT by conservativecorner

In a rare visit to Capitol Hill, President Bush pressed Republican senators yesterday to resurrect the compromise overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, but many of the senators instead demanded that his administration first show a more determined commitment to border security.

The visit was the first time in five years that Bush had come to the Capitol for the Republican senators' weekly policy luncheon. He and senior administration officials painted the meeting -- coming five days after the collapse on the Senate floor of the tenuous compromise on immigration -- as a rescue session. Bush made an impassioned plea for the legislation, saying "the status quo is unacceptable."

"Now is the time to move a comprehensive bill that enforces our borders and has good workplace enforcement, that doesn't grant automatic citizenship, that addresses this problem in a comprehensive way," he said after the lunch.

Although senators described the meeting as cordial, even jovial, they also said the president's efforts to rally GOP support did not win any converts. "We're off the bill. We ought to stay off the bill for a while," said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), one of the bill's sternest critics.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) marveled at the president's passion and commitment. But, he added: "We didn't expect anyone to stand up and holler that they had an epiphany."

And, apparently, nobody did.

I realize it has been nearly eight years but, IMHO, Fred should still be watched closely ...

**Coming out of the lurking shadow** I would like to ask the board a question. I, along with you have been on a calling and letter writing campaign to voice my opposition to this bill. Recently, while watching construction on a pool and pool house in my neighborhood, it occurred to me that many of the people working on this project were more than likely illegals. Would it not behoove us as Americans and also benefit our cause to make the phone call to report this illegal activity? It would be another step in voicing our opposition to what is happening in our country. Many of us are probably aware of illegal employment, albeit manufacturing, construction or whatever in our own communities. I think it would be a good idea to also flood ICE with calls.

Take a look at this:

Lott says “Oh, don’t worry about all these silly enforcement first amendments, I’ll make sure I make the bill meaningless in conference”!!!!

This guy is an a-hole. Plain and simple.

Best thing to do is this:

1. grab your digital camera and snap off a couple of pics.
Print them out on your home printer...just use regular paper on a color printer...no need to get fancy here. Hopefully the contractor will have some nice signs on the side of his truck...with a phone number.

2. Send pics to your state’s unemployment office, your state tax office and also the IRS. ICE won’t respond to any calls regarding “illegals on the jobsite”.

Do this once a week for a month....same contractor’s pics...just to make sure they get multiple copies.

See how much fun can be had for $10.00 or less?

:)

Yesterday, federal agents raided the offices of a food-processing plant in Oregon, placing about 100 workers under administrative arrest for possible deportation.

But, Chertoff said, a broader crackdown on illegal immigration "is a hostage" to Senate intransigence.

Interesting. He seems to be pointing the finger of blame at the Dems.

I think they have got the message. No border enforcement = no immigration bill.

I think it is amazing that Texas and the south are now called upon to save the union.

My 2 senators from Arizona sure the hell aren’t going to do it.

Hard to certify when you can see folks tip toeing across the Rio Grande or massing and running in droves in San Diego across the porous border.
Then there is always the non patrolled areas of the desert etc.
Fools and idiots and just plain liars that’s who is in charge of the illegal immigration deal.
Just enforce current laws.
Round up illegals and send them ALL home. I’m tired of paying for your unborn children to be born an your criminal behaviors.

It is too dangerous to go to the public square. It’s full of MS-13 and other ILLEGAL Alien gang bangers, who are getting stoned the old fashioned way.
But,... can he be appropriately stoned in an air conditioned Mall?
If it is done early enough we can join the Mall Walkers and kill two Amnesty birds with one stone, so to speak.

If done correctly, with delayed action until the 5th of May, he can be a sort of really useless Pinata.
But when broken open instead of goodies, there is just some more Republican party bullshit. And the kind that cannot be used as fertilizer.

Chertoff..." He noted that because 40 percent of illegal immigrants come in legally but overstay their visas, no amount of border security could stem that tide"

So, then shutting the border down would have an effect on 60 percent of the problem & you have no deseire to start there?

I think chertoff, you are part of the probelm!

The Ruuskies were able to build an effective wall across the two "German" countries (The Iron curtain" with less prosperity than what the U.S. has!

There are an estimated 75,000 dams in the United States, blocking 600,000 miles (960,000 km) of river or about 17% of rivers in the nation [1]. The following is a partial list of reservoirs and dams in the United States!!

And we are not able to build a few thousand miles fences!!!

Hello, hello???
