Hawks for Thompson (Fred alert)
The Weekly Standard ^ | 07/12/07 | Stephen F. Hayes

FRED THOMPSON IS adding more big-name policy talent as his testing-the-waters committee continues to grow into a real presidential campaign. Among the new additions: Mark Esper, national security adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist; Joel Shin, a top policy staffer on Bush-Cheney 2000; and Elizabeth Cheney, a former top official in the State Department's Near East and South Asia department.

Esper, who worked for Thompson when he was a Senator in the 1990s, currently serves as executive vice president of the Aerospace Industries of America and is a member of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Thompson previously served on the commission. Before joining AIA, Esper was Bill Frist's director of National Security Affairs. According to a biography on the U.S.-China commission website, Esper's "portfolio in that position included all defense, foreign policy, and intelligence matters for the United State Senate, where he also worked on trade and homeland security issues." He worked on executive-legislative national security matters--an important job given the Bush Administration's posture on a robust executive branch. Esper's current AIA obligations have limited his participation to that of an informal adviser.

Between them they should reach the level of expertise on defense matters that one of Hunter’s junior staffers has.

I would hope Fred would stay out of the Bushes — There are briers in that patch.

Considering that Hunter is now an elected and active member of Congress- perhaps you’re right! On the other hand- Fred has kept himself informed on events foreign and domestic.

Duncan Hunter is a terrific fellow- I think the world of him and appreciate his vocal opposition to this damn immigration bill and work he’s done in the areas of defense and China etc..

“Sorry. Fred mania has yet to sweep me off my feet.”

Me too.

It is the repeat of the Bush bots. These folks are not looking before one leaps. Maybe they will buy a bridge I have for sale.

There are so many sheep out there. It is mind boggling. These folks are not using their brain if they have one.

One must study the situation before leaping.

For the record, I am not a McRudyRom.

Mc is nuts.

Rudy is a leftist.

Rom is too slick.

And oh yes…I am not impressed and do not like Fred’s list of friends.

There are others I am looking at right now.

I know I will be slapped around by the Thompson bots (robots), but don’t wait for a reply from me.

It is the repeat of the Bush bots.

Bush wasn’t writing articulate and accessible essays on Federalism a year before the primaries.

Sorry, but just because your guy is losing doesn’t make Fred into Bush.

Oh, shut up. You don’t know how much research we have done. I have been following Thompson for over a decade. We can provide page after page of research.

it’s fine not to be a fredophile, but sniping at the opposing candidates doesn’t do much to boost them. i am a fredfan but i don’t go on other candidates threads and denigrate them. other than rudy, i wish them all luck with their campaigns ; )

One last comment to all you Thompson bot sheep:

Okay, I am breaking my promise to myself. There is a huge storm coming in with lightning, and I have to turn off my computer. (My computer was fried once before.)

To all you Thompson bots:

Baa. (sheep talk).

These folks are not using their brain if they have one.

i will say the same to you, you look small and petty for making those sort of comments. no one has a gun to your head and is demanding you support anyone. But to denigrate others for their support of a candidate by insinuating it is not a reasoned and intelligent support is small-minded and doesn't become you. i am opposed to rudy as the nominee but i do not denigrate his supporters, other than when they attempt to paint him as a conservative. a rudy supporter who supports him, while fully admitting that he is a liberal republican, has my respect, but not my support. i respect those who support the other republican candidates and wish them and their candidates well, without feeling the need to point out the foibles of each of them.

I like Fred and might vote for him in the primaries, but I still have a number of questionable issues Fred has not addressed to my satisfaction as yet, particularly with regard to his generally positive stance on federalism. While that may help him on some issues like immigration which is decidedly a federal issue, assuming he maintains his current aggressive stand against the proposed Senate amnesty bill, it might hurt him on others issues like tort reform. His current responses to questions on CFR have not been too encouraging either, although a comment he made about buying votes for cash from special interest groups made some sense. Like you pissant I like Hunter but I fear he may not get enough traction to make a race of it. That said, it is a long way until the primaries and stranger things have happened before along that path. I think Hunter to gain some traction would have to make a good showing in the South Carolina primary. The other candidates in the race are not on my pick list, including RG, McCain & Mitt. The two moderate to liberal candidates from the Northeast and the maverick rino from AZ do not impress me at this point.

As an aside, it appears only a few of the declared and undeclared candidates in the Pubbie field, if you include Newt and Fred in the mix, would be able to win their home States in a general election. I’m not sure what that means, but you only have to look at the results in 2000 in the State of Tennessee, and 2004 in the State of North Carolina, to see it does mean a little bit.

Spot on.

Fred’s folksy southern charm masks his great intellect. He is indeed skilled at the art of articulation. Those that do not see it yet, will.

There are a lot of very smart people who are supporting Fred. Naturally- there will be some “bots” too...but there always are for nearly every candidate.

Fred is a thoughtful, measured federalist.

There are a lot of us who like Fred because we’ve watched and listened to him for years- not because we’re jumping on a bandwagon.

There is more to Fred than you may at first think..
