Back in July 2003, President Bush, in response to a question about stepped up attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, famously and defiantly declared, Bring em on! Oh, how that tune has changed.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates - using the old tactic of releasing controversial news just before the weekend in the hope of minimizing press coverage - announced Friday afternoon that he will advise President Bush to replace Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (this fall), fearing that a contentious renomination hearing in the Senate would focus too heavily on six years of war.
Apparently, President Bush has accepted the advice.
So let me get this straight, and borrow a famous scene from the movie Animal House. The Bush administrations old attitude toward mass-murdering tyrants and terrorists around the world has been akin to this: Hussein. Hes a dead man. Bin Laden? Dead. Kim Jung ll? Dead. AHMADINEJAD!!!
But when it comes to standing up to pasty-faced Harry Reid and the Democrats in the Senate?
I have decided that at this moment in our history, the nation, our men and women in uniform, and Gen. Pace himself would not be well-served by a divisive ordeal in selecting the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Gates.
What a crock.
Pace was/is eminently qualified (http://www.defenselink.mil/bios/biographydetail.aspx?biographyid=85) to run the nations joint military operations. Which is not to say Paces replacement isnt an eminently qualified military professional, as well. He is. But the success or failure of the U.S. effort in Iraq will ultimately be determined by what happens over the next year or so following the surge. Why change horses midstream?
As CBS News reports, Paces departure will put nearly an entirely new slate of leaders and military commanders in charge of the war. Why oust Pace at this critical juncture and bring in a whole new team? It makes no sense.
And its a first-degree insult for Gates to suggest that hes trying to save this Marine general from a divisive ordeal before Congress, as though Gen. Pace might not be able handle such a traumatic experience. Get real.
Were talking about a guy with military decorations up the wazoo, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, with two oak leaf clusters; Defense Superior Service Medal; the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal with Combat V; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with gold star; Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V; Navy Achievement Medal with gold star; and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Im pretty sure Gen. Pace didnt earn all those medals for baking cookies.
A lot of us have been losing faith in this administrations ability to wage this war for some time now, fearing that political considerations were taking precedence over military ones. If President Bring em On! Bush is willing to throw Gen. Pace under the tank for the sole reason of avoiding a political fight with Senate Majority Leader Harry The War is Lost Reid and his band of cheese-eating surrender monkeys, then maybe it IS time to bring the troops home immediately.
Semper fi.
You mistake and confuse realism with elitism. He’s Dad’s chip off the block.
Please see post #19.
Enough is enough. I proudly voted for Bush twice only to see the man flush himself down the toilet. He makes me sick to my stomach.
Hurry up, 2009.
Do what?

chuckling. I’m glad I’m not the only one confused by the comments you responded so artfully to.
Gen. Peter Pace is a thoroughly decent man. The left hates him because he gave his opinion and promised to derail his appointment. Bush gave in.
A damned shame!
You blind followers of GWB are no different than the People's Temple members who followed the Reverend Jim Jones and drank the Kool-Aid.
What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand? The President is sworn to uphold the laws of the land, but in this case, he is selling us out.
“Throwing Gen. Pace Under the Tank [If It’s Not Amnesty, El Presidente’ Jorge’ Can Care Less] “
Pace’s real sin?
You can’t expect to offend the Vice President’s extended family
and expect to keep your job. No matter how accomplished, tough
and smart you are.
Pace just didn’t get queer enough fast enough.

When he starts earning it, he will again receive it. Right now he is failing his Constitutional requirement to uphold and defend the laws of the land.
because a bunch of trailer trash KKK
same thing as lindsey goober and others using “bigot” and “racist” to denigrate those of us who see the damage that “hispanic” illegal aliens do to our American way of life in every way imaginable.
Amen! They are simpletons who still think in nothing other than Party labels. Never mind that Americans are taking it in their shorts and wallets for all the illegals in this country. The elites worship money and power above the Constitution and rule of law.
Responsbility? "For" re-confirmation? LOL. She would vote against him in a heartbeat with delight. After dragging Pace through the mud on his gay comments joined by all the other Dem creeps on the Armed Forces Committee.
And meanwhile Her Heinous' favorables would go sky-high as she won back the Code-Pinkos into her Presidential cheering camp.
No thanks. Seeing the Dems and especially Her Ugliness score political points for her Presidential ambitions through a show-trial would be vastly more sickening than anything I've seen in the last 4 years.
Most notable for me was CFR.
It makes perfect sense when you realize that Bush runs his whitehouse like a CEO, or the owner of a ML baseball team. You back your management team until it is evident that the policies aren't working. Then you get a new management team...
I don't get why you don't join the Dem effort to impeach if you honestly believe Bush and Cheney guilty of treason.
Coming from you, that's almost funny. Still posting from your parent's basement?
Why are you being so mean and jumping to conclusions? I don’t see any Bush haters on this thread. Shame on you. I think people are really angry at his no give position on immigration and refuses to discuss it.
And you know that is not right. You better go to your room right now young man; and don’t come out until dinner is called.
The name calling and personal attacks of yours are disgusting.
You need psychological help.
I will work within the Republican Party for change. Both my senators who are Republicans voted against the Amnesty/Elitism Bill, and there are many more Republicans speaking out on this very issue.
As we all should.
However, I would think that if one really believed that the Commander of Chief was guilty of treason in a time of war, he would work to impeach him from the office.
