Lieberman favors military strike on Iran

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record) said Sunday the United States should consider a military strike against Iran because of Tehran's involvement in Iraq.

"I think we've got to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq," Lieberman said. "And to me, that would include a strike over the border into Iran, where we have good evidence that they have a base at which they are training these people coming back into Iraq to kill our soldiers."

The U.S. accuses Iran of fostering terrorism and Tehran's nuclear ambitions have brought about international reproach.

Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000 who now represents Connecticut as an independent, spoke of Iranians' role in the continued violence in Iraq.

"By some estimates, they have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," he said. "Well, we can tell them we want them to stop that. But if there's any hope of the Iranians living according to the international rule of law and stopping, for instance, their nuclear weapons development, we can't just talk to them.

"If they don't play by the rules, we've got to use our force, and to me, that would include taking military action to stop them from doing what they're doing."

Lieberman said much of the action could probably be done by air, although he would leave the strategy to the generals in charge

Lieberman will need to recruit his own strike force. The Bush administration is as dead-in-the-water as the immigration bill.

William Kristol’s suggestion to make Lieberman SecDefense after Rumsfeld, instead of Gates seems to make more and more sense. I certainly wouldn’t mind having Lieberman as SecDef.

Lieberman is the last voice of common sense left in the Democrat party.

“Lieberman is the last voice of common sense left in the Democrat party.”

The sad thing is he could only win as an independent!

Lieberman is correct, but he should keep his mouth shut. His statement just tipped off the Iranians about our knowledge of their training camp. There goes the element of surprise.

Good for Lieberman.

You can only pretend for so long that Iran is not intervening in Iraq, training terrorists, supplying them with weapons, and giving them support and a safe haven. We “have no evidence” that this is government supported.

Sure. That was clinton’s favorite phrase, after he had finished shredding the evidence: “There is no evidence!”

The Taliban and Saddam thumbed their noses at us because from the days of Carter to the days of Clinton, we demonstrated that we were reluctant or apparently afraid to strike back when we were attacked. They learned their lesson and there was a general increase in respect for our country among the Muslims.

But they heard our media, they heard the Euros and the Democrats calling for surrender, and when Bush failed to follow up, they grew increasingly bolder.

Now Bush has made it perfectly clear, through statements by Gates and Rice, that he doesn’t intend to do a thing about Iran. What kind of stupidity is that? Instead of walk softly and carry a big stick, it’s carry a big stick but tell the enemy you don’t plan to use it under any circumstances.

The peaceniks and the MSM will continue to treat him as a warmonger, yet he seems reluctant to finish up the job he started.

Huh? Excuse me, but this is nonsense. If you are referring to satellite images of Iranian training facilites for the Karbala attack which killed 5 US soldiers: "Aviation Week and Space Technology" (http://billroggio.com/) published this information. The Iranians already know that we know their training facility. Lieberman didn't blew anything.

Agree completely, Joe. Unfortunately those who make the decisions are too frightened of the possible reaction of "the Islamic street" to take the appropriate action. Hell, they haven't even had the guts to go after that terrorist al-Sadr. ....for the same reasons. "Hearts and minds" bullsh/t.
