We glider pilots call 'em thermals, and, as such, that's where I got my name.

KEWL!!

I've never been in a glider.

I bet it's a peaceful and quiet bast to experience.

I went up in a glider once and was surprised by all the noise - wind noise as the glider rushes through the air at ~ 100 mph(?) and all sorts of banging caused by minor turbulence on the airframe.

The canopy turns the cockpit into a greenhouse in short order once it's closed. That's great in the dead of winter, but this time of year it quickly turns into a clam bake. The cure is opening all the fresh air vents, but that makes for a lot of wind noise, especially if you are flying much over 60 kts. Otherwise, it is quite peaceful.....
