The Paris Hilton train wreck this past week shows unequivocally that our society is collapsing from within.
It was not about Hilton. It was about us. Here is a woman, a celebutante, a pop tart, receiving more attention than the top story of the week; namely the Bush immigration bill going down in flames.
We were at first shocked and outraged that Hiton was released from jail just five days into an already reduced sentence for committing a crime that could have resulted in her death or the death of other people. We then sat transfixed as we watched the images of Hilton being picked up at her house and brought back to the courtroom. This was reminiscent of the slow speed O.J. Simpson Bronco chase. Wall to wall coverage.
When the judge ordered Hilton to serve her entire 45 day sentence, we both cheered and jeered, depending on how we view the situation. But the bottom line is, we had an opinion. We had an opinion about the images of her crying in the back seat of the squad car, we had an opinion about the screaming fit she exhibited in the courtroom. At water coolers in offices across the United States, the name of Paris Hilton was on the lips of just about every individual.
What does that say about us as a nation?
It says that we are hung up on celebrity status. We love to prop up the rich and famous, then tear them down. It says we care more about whether or not Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan are wearing their panties than whether 30, million illegal aliens will continue to infest our nation. It says we show more concern over Hilton's brief incarceration, than we do over two true patriots, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who are serving 11 and 12 year prison sentences respectively, for protecting our nation admirably from drug smuggling maggots.
The fact that the Hilton story was the major news item of the past week makes it crystal clear that our priorities as a nation are screwed up.
The bottom line here is that Hilton got what she deserved. And if we allow the President to resurrect this immigration bill, a truly more important issue, we will get what we deserve.
Memo to Bush: After Hilton gets out of jail, after Lohan sobers up, after Spears gets her underwear back on, recruit them to sell your amnesty plan through public service announcements. The public will probably buy it.
For complete coverage of issues that matter to Americans most, listen to America Talks Monday through Friday at 10 pm eastern time at www.americatalks.com.
If you want to see more, do a Google Search using "Britney panties".Yikes. You weren't kidding.
I did not realize that President Bush had secretly started the Immigration Bill.
He did? Lordy Where have I been?
I do have it from an impeccable source, though, that Paris Brothel will become Bushs Presidential Czar to the President. But then, another impeccable source states that it is going to be her Chihuahua because this will show Bushs great passion for Mexico and the illegal Mexicans.
thank you!!
Direct hit weegee.
They won't even tell you why it failed cloture... they've cited everything under the sun for its failure EXCEPT the truth. MILLIONS OF PHONE CALLS!
America see's an out of control brushfire in illegal immigration... and our Senate is offering to fight it with gasoline!
To me, it is just an illustration of how the news is turning into lots of comercials for other parts of media conglomerates.
Who's this "we," Quimosabe?
This isn’t a porn site, OK?
“As bad as the Clinton scandals were in terms of what they showed us about the character of our President, they didn’t directly threaten your personal life.”
You are correct.
But the author engages in shallow analysis here:
What does that say about us as a nation? It says that we are hung up on celebrity status.
No, Dave, having an opinion about something is not the same as being "hung up." Some folks on both sides, even, had valid opinions about the general applicablity of this case to society at large. Some thought celebrities should not be coddled more than other lawbreakers, despite their wealth or notariety. Others thought celebrities should not get harsher treatment than similar lawbreakers. (Actually, both positons are consistent with each other, but often were voiced depending on how the person viewed Paris's treatment in particular).
In short, Dave, your readers can have opinions about both the Paris case and illegal immigration at a time and even walk and chew gum, so enough with the generalities.
Now, go write a column about something important and don't mention any celebrities if that makes you feel more profound.
If slick spent half the time and effort doing his job as he did covering up and dealing with his substantial personal shortcomings, I could almost agree with you.
This is linked. That is why I think this is all bullshit. I want Paris Hilton to be treated like drunken illegal aliens. Release her to get busted and released like an illegal alian.
It’s not we. It’s the American mainstream media that’s transfixed on the harpy.
Has anyone noticed the uptick in the number of Hilton hotels commercials on CNN?
If slick spent half the time and effort doing his job as he did covering up and dealing with his substantial personal shortcomings, I could almost agree with you.
In no way am I disagreeing with you. You have a point. But I keep thinking: The best thing that happens in our country is when the congresscrooks are on vacation. Clintons vacation was all year every year attending to and/or raping women. He was also a drunk and on drugs and not attending to our countrys business, which I think, in some way, we were lucky. He left the rest of us alone.
Again, I am not disagreeing with you. It is my disgust with all those slimy, dung beetle crooks in Washington that keeps me from seeing anything good if there is such a thing as good.
Regards.
I had my tv on Fox News for a couple hours, but I thought it was the Cartoon Network. I haven’t laughed that hard in a while. I can’t understand the obsession, but it was a pleasant distraction.
This was all real cute and cleverly contrived on the writer’s part, but what happened here is that the L.A. County Sheriff’s office lost a level of autonomy that can severely compromise their ability to deal with overcrowding rules and orders; either the sheriff runs the jail or the judge does - somebody has to decide.
Little ‘Tutes...
either the sheriff runs the jail or the judge does - somebody has to decide.
Interesting indeed.
Thank you.
“Every minute of every day, YOUR chances of being robbed and murdered by an illegal-alien is increasing, and every minute YOUR share of the illegal-alien welfare/healthcare/prisoncare expense tab is increasing.
Every minute.
This is more important than anything else right now.
If we destroy our country, nothing else matters!!
“Ill bet Bush has not read the amnesty bill he is pushing”
Of course not. His open borders advisors have told him he got everything he wanted.
