Gore's soon-to-be 'green' home
By ERIK SCHELZIG, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 48 minutes ago
Al Gore, the environmental activist stung by criticism over his house's energy efficiency, said Friday that renovations are nearly complete to make it a model "green" home.
"This plan has been in the works for a long time," the former vice president said in an interview with The Associated Press. "The only thing that has changed is that we're more public about it because of the misleading attack by a global-warming denier group."
Earlier this year, a conservative group criticized Gore, citing electric bills that were far more than the typical Nashville home. Utility records showed the Gore family paid an average monthly electric bill of about $1,200 last year for its 10,000-square-foot home.
Gore's renovation project, which he said has been in the works for months, seeks to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Once his upscale neighborhood changed zoning laws earlier this year, Gore was able to place solar panels on his roof, and he's now preparing to install a geothermal system that will, among other things, drastically reduce the cost of heating his pool.
Gore is also upgrading windows and ductwork, installing more energy-efficient light bulbs and creating a rainwater collection system for irrigation and water management.
The home houses offices for Gore and his wife, Tipper, as well as a commercial kitchen for formal events.
Drew Johnson, president of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, the group that initially criticized Gore, said the "renovations are obviously in direct response to our finding that he's a hypocrite on the issue of global warming."

Now, You shut your mouth.
Oooooh, “Global Warming Denier.” Such a label. I guess that makes me one — GWD — must try it on for size. Yup, fits well. Well, I am going to call them Global Warming Perps.
Too late. Hypocrisy isn’t something you can undo by simply adding thermal pane windows.
Sure Al...sure. I mean you would think that the guy who “seized the initiative and created the internet” would have had the forethought to check zoning laws before he bought the house to see if all his global warming protection do-dads were allowed.
What about your other three homes you lying maggot infested scum sucker?
Forgive me folks. There just aren't words adequate enough in the English language to describe how much I loathe this thing called Al Gore. I doubt any other known languages possess such words either.
Big flipping deal. The man has a carbon footprint as big as Uranus. He could live in a mud hut for a thousand years and not compensate the planet for all the resources he and his family have consumed over the course of their lives.
he’s now preparing to install a geothermal system that will, among other things, drastically reduce the cost of heating his pool.
Wow. Big of him!
Just another global warmer denier and h8tr of mother earth I am.
It looks like Bush’s example of living in an energy efficient home (by rich peoples standards),has shamed one of the planets most energy wasting people into some expensive, cosmetic, action.
I won’t stop criticising until he and his household are wiping their butts with leaves.
Cheaper heat for his pool. A nation cheers.
No mention of the carbon footprint of all these fancy new devices — their manufacture, installation, etc.
But that’s beside the point. Here’s a rich ahole who’s preaching global warming and we’ve got to consume less and what does he do? Does he live in a smaller house? No. He spends a kajillion dollars making his bigger house more energy efficient (once you subtract the startup footprint of the change-over).
This is beyond hypocrisy. This is obscene. If he hadn’t invented the internet I’d have nothing but gut-wrenching discuss for this turd-ball.
Kermie says: "It's not easy being green, but you're STILL a hypocrite, Al!"
Gore did NOT invent the internet.
Gee. Really?
Any news on when the zinc mine on that j*goff’s property is gonna go ‘green’ too?
I’m sure Al’s new place will be a modest 800 sq. ft. home with solar heating, no air conditioning and a composting toilet. My bet is he will build some environmental show home and then quietly keep living in his mansion. I wonder if he is going to give up flying private jets and riding in limos?
And the planet has a fresh water shortage.
