WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans and Democrats scrambled Thursday to salvage a fragile compromise that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants after it suffered setbacks.
The measure, a top priority for President Bush that's under attack from the right and left, faced a crucial test vote designed to measure senators' appetite for the "grand bargain" between liberals and conservatives on immigration.
The legislation failed a similar hurdle earlier in the day, and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., threatened that if it failed again, "the bill's over with."
Republican negotiators were working to break an impasse on a proposal that would let employers continue to handpick the high-skilled workers they want to get green cards, rather than requiring workers to qualify through a new, government-run point system.

I agree. I say we intensify our efforts now. Call everyone of the bastards and tell em ENFORCE THE CURRENT LAWS! No amnesty ever again, enforce the laws.
I will start my phone calls tomorrow. I say we pressure them til it hurts or they will bring this monster back in the dead of night.
Let them blame it on the conservatives. I think we all deserve credit. Well, most of us... Not the Bushbots.
We (all patriotic American who understand the value of citizenship and are upset about it being given to illegal invaders) did it.
Now let’s enforce our current laws.
It's up to Bush now. When he gets back from Europe, he can push it or let it die.
I think Reid wants it to die and he will definitely pull it. And kill it. He feels betrayed by Bush for setting him up -- then not supporting it.
Oh...
Then all the officials who supported this garbage should be put in stockades on the Capitol lawn and have rotten fruit hurled at em’. Founding Fathers style!
On another subject briefly, I was wondering how the judge and DA out in CA feel when their rulings are blatantly ignored. Kind of like the prosecutors who tried and convicted this border agents falsely and Scooter Libby falsely. DA and Judge in CA, makes you angry, doesn’t it when someone goes around you and through you and over you just to get what they want.
It's dead.
I just read harry reid’s comments...HE PLANS TO BRING IT BACK BY THE END OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!this thing is not dead.. dems and lib republicans are FURIOUS that the little people outwitted them.....They will get their revenge and bring this monster back like they do their pay raises....IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT!!!!!
Reid made is sound like it was “Bush’s bill” and this was yet another defeat for Bush. What a slimeball. Anyway, at this point, I’m very disappointed with George W. Bush. And besides, he is NOT running for POTUS in 2008.
I spoke with many people today, almost all Republicans and had supported President Bush up to this Immigration Bill, but NOT ANY LONGER! His downfall with the Conservatives was to not only ignore us, but to tell us what bad Americans we are for opposing his pet project. Too bad. I am very thankful his term ends on January 20, 2009.
Maybe now these clowns will listen up when America tells them “Why dont you start by supporting existing immigration laws vs. creating new ones!”
“Reid made is sound like it was Bushs bill”
It WAS Bush’s bill. This would NOT have been brought up again now if he hadn’t pushed for it.
He’s as despicable as the rest.
I agree, and I've got him in my handle. He's lost me on this issue.
I have a better question...
If it's impossible to enforce our existing immigration laws, why not just repeal them first?
Bingo
You know, I have also been a very loyal supporter and worker for GW, but no longer. When he said that those who don’t support this bill don’t want what’s right for America, I was floored! I thought, “I don’t know this man. Who took over his body and mind?”
Here’s another question: If it takes 40 minutes just to ger through Aiport Security, how do they expect to do background checks on illegals within 24 hours? What a joke!!
