Today is the Cloture Vote on Immigration Bill [first cloture vote fails; 2nd cloture vote fails]
7 June 2007 | Gulf War One

Posted on 06/07/2007 6:17:41 AM PDT by Gulf War One

This is the homestretch.

Call and e-mail your senators today, Republicans and Democrats, urging them not to table debate on this critical piece of legislation.

It deserves a fair and open debate of all ramifications. To do otherwise is unamerican.

Ask them to vote "NO" on cloture.

Keep bumping this to the top.

Today is the day.

The problem with the argument that ‘Dems will make it even worse in the future’ is that there is nothing to stop a future Dem Congress from doing that anyway.

If this bill were to pass today, and the Dems ended up gaining seats in 2009, they could always reopen the issue and make it even more pro open borders. You can’t seriously believe that they are going to say, “oh no, we can’t do that because it’s already been passed.” Congress goes back and changes provisions in passed bills all the time. You know that. Look at how many times they waived deadlines and granted extensions in the original IRCA of 1986.

Sorry but that is an argument that does not stand up to any rational consideration.

I am hoping McConnel is one of the good guys and will step up to the right thing. Keep calling!

Do you think GWB will fire Mrs. McConnell if Mitch does the right thing?

In all of his years in public life, I have never seen GWB so committed on anything as he is on this immigration fiasco. Otherwise, he has never been that firm on anything else.

“Personally I am watching this vote very closely. I am giving absolutely nothing to the Republican Party that could end up in the hands of these RINO’s. I will financially support whoever runs against them in the Primary Elections.”

Same here. It’ll be a cold day in hell before the national Republican organizations get another dime from me. I wish there were a Conservative party these days. The Repubs and Dems have morphed into one big spineless mess and are only concerned with their own hides.

Tort reform (in Texas)

Education reform (TX, the US - whether you like it or not - and I’m speaking primarily of the testing laws)

Tax cuts.

The war.

Held on to Rumsfeld probably too long in the face of horrific abuse.

Still holding on to Alberto Gonzalez (like it or not).

To get John Bolton in as U.N. ambassador.

To recess appoint William Pickering to a high judgeship, esp. after Pickering was accused by the Left of having been a racist years ago (when he was anything BUT).

Dogged support for the death penalty, for which he took huge abuse from the left wing and in the case of Karla Fay Tucker, the right wing Christian groups who demanded she not be executed because of her “conversion” in prison.

Beating Ann Richards and Al Gore when in both instances it was generally believed highly unlikely.

To name a few.

why did martinez vote no...wouldn’t he be for the amnesty bill passing?

i am getting very confused. Everyone seems to know how this works. How about a dumbed down version for the rest of us..what is with ‘cloture”?

1 and 2 have to be the President and the SecDef, who control our military.

3-6 would be Attorney General, Speaker of the House, House Majority Leader, and SecState, probably in that order.

I wouldn’t put the courts so high; other than abortion and a few wedge areas, they don’t have that much influence in a lot of areas.

Cloture is to vote on whether to start or stop debate on a bill. If cloture to stop debate is voted upon by the majority, the bill is considered in its final form and can be brought to the floor for a vote on passage. By voting no for cloture, the senators are saying they want to continue debate and perhaps adding amendments to change the provisions of the bill. Some hope that voting no for cloture means the bill will die and never be voted on. At this point we don't know which of these will occur, so I feel rejoicing over the cloture vote of NO is premature.

“Otherwise, he has never been that firm on anything else.”

He was pretty firm about Harriet Miers calling opponents ‘Sexist”.

He was pretty firm about the Dubai Ports Deal calling opponents “Racist”

There are a couple of important facts that were left out.
For Cloture you have to have 60 votes. 60 votes is the threshold at which a fillibuter cannot be substained. Clouture has to have a “Super Majority” vote.

Otherwise a fillibuster is a possibility.
