Yes but the 8 was given to Jr by his father specifically because his granddaddy Ralph ran that number.

Because JR wants to go win championships, he has to step into a ride that already has top 35 owners points so he doesn’t have to race his way into every race. If this is the case, then somebody has got to lose their ride.
