Although the study was not designed to figure out why these disparities exist ... here is a suggestion ... reanalyze the data stripping out race and instead key in on whether or not the prospective patient had private insurance that would pay the bill. Then there will be no surprise at all.
To publish a racial study like this without "figur[ing] out why" comes dangerously close to statistical malpractice if not inciting a riot, IMHO.

They don’t care - it makes a great headline about how bad American health care in particular and Americans in general are. Half the folks only scan headlines, so the message is delivered.
