Hamas to take control of the crossing with Egypt

Published: 06.15.07, 12:38 / Israel News

Hamas announced Friday that it plans to take control of Gaza’s crossing with Egypt. The crossing has been closed since the outbreak of fighting earlier this week. Under an Israeli-Palestinian agreement, it was monitored by European observers. It is not clear whether the monitors or Israel would accept such an arrangement.

In the past, the crossing was patrolled by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Presidential Guard, one of the forces defeated in a five-day battle with Hamas. (AP)

The Regime Against the Nation

by Patrick J. Buchanan

WorldNetDaily. 6/12/2007.

Last week, in one of the great uprisings of modern politics, Middle America rose up and body-slammed the national establishment.

The Bush-Kennedy-McCain amnesty for 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens, and for the businesses that have hired them -- a bill backed by La Raza and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post -- went down to crushing defeat.

Majority Leader Harry Reid fell 15 votes short (45 to 50) of shutting off debate. Like the rout of the Dubai ports deal, the victory was achieved by a firestorm of public protest, reflected in millions of phone calls and e-mails, and citizens marching to town meetings.

The capital's capitulation to the country was unprecedented and astonishing. Not two weeks earlier, the amnesty provision of the bill had been supported by more than 60 senators.

But opponents of this bill, which would reward mass criminality with mass amnesty and eventual U.S. citizenship, ought not rest.

For President Bush is coming back to resuscitate the monster, and this bill has more support in the Senate than the 45 votes it got Thursday. Some Republicans and Democrats who voted not to shut off debate are privately committed to amnesty, if they can be given political cover and face-saving amendments to take home.

Sen. John Kyl is not necessarily wrong when he says, "All we have to do on the Republican side is sit down with those who have amendments, get those amendments in a reasonable package, not too many, but enough so all of the members can say they had their chance."

Kyl reads his party right. For the GOP is the political instrument of K Street and Corporate America -- the folks who fund the party and finance the campaigns. And the No. 1 issue of Corporate America is Bush-Kennedy-McCain. For not only does it give blanket amnesty to businesses for hiring illegals, it legalizes the illegals and ensures Corporate America an endless supply of cheap immigrant labor.

The fundamental reason this bill is not dead is that its authors and backers will never quit. For this legislation is part of a larger agenda of a large slice of America's economic and political elite.

What is that agenda?

They have a vision of a world where not only capital and goods but people move freely across borders. Indeed, borders disappear. It is a vision of a "deep integration" of the United States, Canada and Mexico in a North American Union, modeled on the European Union and tied together by super-highways and railroads, where crossing from Mexico into the United States would be as easy as crossing from Virginia into Maryland. It is about the merger of nations into larger transnational entitles and, ultimately, global governance.

This immigration bill is but a piece of a great global project already far advanced. In 1993, a majority of Americans opposed the NAFTA trade deal with Mexico because they did not believe the propaganda and feared that, as Henry Kissinger said, it represented the architecture of a new world order.

More than a dozen years have elapsed. And the results? Contrary to the promises, our trade surplus with Mexico did not grow. It vanished. In 13 years, we have run $500 billion in trade deficits with Mexico. Last year's $60 billion was the largest ever. Mexico now exports more cars, trucks and auto parts to the United States than we export to the world.

What NAFTA did was enable U.S. companies to close their plants here, fire their American workers, and move their factories and jobs to Mexico, while Mexico continued to export its poor to the United States.

What is the hidden agenda of the global companies, which evolved out of what were once great American companies?

They want a limitless supply of low-wage immigrant labor and an end to penalties for hiring illegals. They want the freedom to shut factories here and move them to nations where wages are low, benefits nonexistent and regulations lax. They want to be able to move products back to the United States free of charge. They want to be rid of their American workers, but keep their American consumers.

They want to be able to go out to Asia and hire bright kids and bring them to the United States to replace middle-age U.S. workers who cost too much. They want to be able to outsource their white-collar jobs to India at a fraction of the wages they pay Americans.

It is about globalism -- and about greed. And, as the Bible says, love of money is the root of all evil. But they have a problem. The nation has begun to awaken to the reality that the vision of the global corporation and the transnational elite cannot be realized without the death of the American republic. And so they are in a fight that is long overdue.

Seven jihadists sentenced in Britain for bomb plots with targets including NYSE

“Last month, the High Court cut Barot’s jail term from 40 to 30 years after it was ruled the initial sentence was too harsh.”

Harsher than massive bombings targeting civilians, infrastructure, and the national economy? An update on this story.”Britons jailed over al Qaeda plot to bomb NYSE,” by Michael Holden for Reuters:

LONDON (Reuters) - Seven Britons linked to a plot to blow up U.S. financial institutions, including the New York Stock Exchange, and stage a series of attacks in Britain were jailed for a total of 136 years by a London court on Friday.

Prosecutors said the men were part of a group headed by senior al Qaeda operative Dhiren Barot and described as “one of the most dangerous and ambitious terrorist cells ever to operate in this country.”

Barot is currently serving a life jail term after admitting last year he had planned bomb attacks in Britain and the United States.

Six of the men, Mohammed Naveed Bhatti, Junade Feroze, Zia Ul Haq, Abdul Aziz Jalil, Nadeem Tarmohamed and Omar Abdur Rehman pleaded guilty to conspiring with Barot to cause explosions between 2001 and 2004.
The seventh, Qaisar Shaffi, was found guilty on Wednesday.

Barot, a Muslim convert, was considered by some U.S. officials to be either al Qaeda’s cell leader in Europe or at least the head of bin Laden’s organization in Britain.

In early 2001, he had carried out surveillance on the NYSE, Citigroup, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and Prudential in New York, Washington, and Newark, New Jersey.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, he turned his attention to Britain and had plotted coordinated attacks using a radioactive “dirty bomb,” limousines filled with gas cylinders and the blowing up of an underground train beneath the River Thames.

Had their plans come to fruition, Barot’s trial judge said they would have caused “carnage and butchery ... on a colossal and unprecedented scale.”
His seven accomplices had helped put the plans together and scope out targets.

Peter Clarke, head of London’s Counter Terrorism Command, said the men were vital to the plots.

“They were the planning team and were needed by Barot to contribute expertise in areas that he was lacking,” he said.

“They were the trusted few who researched, carried out reconnaissance and supported Barot.”

At Woolwich Crown Court in south London, Feroze was jailed for 22 years; Bhatti and Tarmohamed to 20 years; Ul Haq to 18 years; Jalil to 26 years; Rehman and Shaffi to 15 years.

What will they do when they get out?

Last month, the High Court cut Barot’s jail term from 40 to 30 years after it was ruled the initial sentence was too harsh.

8 Terror Suspects Appear in British Court
A few more details on the British Muslims who were just arrested. From AP:

LONDON -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The defendants included an alleged senior al-Qaida operative also charged with scouting prominent financial targets for terror attacks in the United States - including the New York Stock Exchange, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Prosecution lawyer Sue Hemming said the eight suspects were motivated by “a strong and deeply held ideology” and were willing to carry out extreme acts. She said police have about a hundred computers and thousands of files to examine as part of what promises to be a long and complex investigation.”

Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill More Than 24 Enemy Fighters

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 15, 2007 – Coalition and Afghan forces have killed and detained more than two dozen enemy fighters in operations in Afghanistan over the past two days, U.S. officials said.
Afghan and coalition forces killed “a few” militants and detained three others early today in an operation against Taliban forces at a compound in the Shahjoy district of Zabul province.

During the brief firefight that resulted in the enemy casualties, two civilians were caught in the crossfire. A teenage boy died at the scene, and a younger boy was evacuated to a coalition medical facility.

“Coalition and Afghan forces strive to avoid civilian injuries and are saddened by the loss of life,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “But, when extremists insist on hiding among civilians, as they clearly were here, they are abusing the kindness of their hosts and putting innocents at risk.”

The coalition forces in this operation were acting on credible intelligence that indicated the compound was sheltering local Taliban facilitators of foreign fighters. After the engagement, local villagers confirmed the enemy fighters killed at the scene were Taliban militants.

In other news from Afghanistan, enemy fighters attacked a group of Afghan National Police and coalition forces on patrol three kilometers north of Putay, in the Sangin district of Helmand province yesterday.

More than two dozen enemy fighters were killed during the nine-hour battle, and there are no reports of Afghan civilian injuries.

Elsewhere yesterday, coalition forces engaged several enemy fighters who were positioning a rocket near Kowndalan, in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province. One enemy vehicle was destroyed, and several enemy fighters were killed.

In Zabul province, enemy fighters attacked a combined Afghan National Army and coalition patrol with machine gun and rocket-propelled-grenade fire near Baylogh, in the Deh Chopan district. “A few” enemy fighters were killed during the five-hour firefight, coalition officials said.

Earlier this week, Afghan National Police detained Nawroze, a Taliban financier known only by his last name, in the Sabari district of Khowst province. Nawroze was the primary financier for a Khowst-area Taliban network. According to U.S. officials, he provided financial support to local fighters and paid local tribesmen to conduct attacks against Afghan government officials and innocent Afghan civilians.

Iraqi, Coalition Forces Capture Terrorist Leaders

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 15, 2007 – Iraqi and coalition forces captured one terrorist leader and killed 16 suspected terrorists today. Ten more insurgents died in fighting yesterday.

Coalition forces in Baghdad captured five suspected terrorists, including an alleged al Qaeda in Iraq emir whose organization includes a deadly car-bomb cell in the city, during two raids today. At one targeted location, coalition forces destroyed two vehicles used to transport explosives and personnel for the terrorist network.

An operation in Mosul killed one terrorist. Outside the targeted building, a man identified as Izz al-Din, also known as Abu Ahmad, drew a weapon on the approaching ground forces. Coalition forces engaged and killed him. One suspected terrorist was detained on scene for his involvement with Abu Ahmad.

Abu Ahmad was the head of five terrorist cells in Mosul and was responsible for directing attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces, U.S. officials said.

In Anbar province, coalition forces detained an individual suspected of providing fake documents for al Qaeda leaders and operatives in the Karmah area. Seven other suspected terrorists also were detained for their involvement with al Qaeda in Iraq and its senior leaders.

“The elimination of al Qaeda senior leaders will continue to disrupt terrorist operations in Baghdad and around the country,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force iraq spokesman. “Without the obstructive influence of terrorists, the Iraqi people can determine their own future.”

Yesterday, Multinational Division Baghdad troops killed 10 insurgents who had launched a series of roadside-bomb and small-arms-fire ambushes in the West Rashid district of southern Baghdad.

“The heightened enemy activity in the predominantly Shiia area of West Rashid is believed to be in response to the attack on the Shiite al-Askari Mosque in Samarra,” said Army Maj. Kirk Luedeke, spokesperson for the 4th Interim Brigade Combat team, based out of Fort Riley, Kan.

On June 13, Iraq and coalition forces in charge of securing the Diyala Government Center and the Diyala Operations Center killed one gunman and wounded another, after the troops noticed the gunmen aiming a rocket-propelled grenade at the government center.

Meanwhile, a number of raids have taken place involving the discovery and seizure of enemy munitions. In one raid yesterday, nine individuals were detained on suspicion of running a bomb-making cell in the east Doura neighborhood of Baghdad’s Rashid district.

Soldiers seized the detainees without incident. The individuals detained are believed to be involved in an al Qaeda roadside-bomb and recruiting ring that had recently launched attacks against the unit.

In other news, troops seized several caches on June 13. Baghdad troops teamed up with a platoon of Iraqi national police to conduct a raid in the eastern Sadr City district.

The troops discovered three complete 60 mm mortar systems, complete 82 mm and 120 mm mortar systems, four 120 mm mortar rounds, 32 60 mm mortar rounds, three 107 mm rockets, a rifle scope, two AK-47 rifles, two sets of body armor, and a variety of weapon manuals.

An air and ground assault took place on two houses in Salman Pak on June 13. The raids yielded two 107 mm rockets, homemade explosives, two AK-47 assault rifles, a bolt-action rifle, several propane tanks, copper wire, ammunition, magazines, and several assault vests.

In another raid, Iraqi troops and Baghdad soldiers raided a weapons cache in the Yarmouk neighborhood. The cache contained 113 landmines, 63 grenades, three rockets, three mortars, two gas masks, five washing machine timers, more than 2,000 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and seven boxes of various electronics and other assorted explosives.

It is the largest weapons cache discovery by U.S. or Iraqi forces to date in the Yarmouk area, U.S. officials said.
