Former Presidents Carter, Clinton, Bush Join Hundreds for Dedication of Billy Graham Library

A frail Billy Graham, using a walker and leaning on his son Franklin, was honored Thursday by three former U.S. presidents as they dedicated a museum built to be a "living crusade" that will carry on his work after the minister is gone.

The $27 million Billy Graham Library traces the evangelist's journey from farm boy to the most widely heard minister of all time. He befriended every U.S. president since Harry Truman and preached in person to more than 210 million.

"This building behind me is just a building," Graham said in brief remarks. "It's an instrument, a tool for the Gospel. The primary thing is the Gospel of Christ."

In a keynote address a crowd of about 1,500, President George H.W. Bush wept as he said how much the minister meant to him, calling Graham "a spiritual gift to all of us." Bush noted Graham had comforted four generations of his family; that includes President George W. Bush.

Graham, 88, suffers from fluid on the brain, prostate cancer and Parkinson's disease, and is largely confined to his home in Montreat. His hair thinning and his face dotted by age spots, he was driven by golf cart to the outdoor stage, where aides helped him to his seat in heat inching toward 90 degrees. His wife Ruth, 86, has degenerative osteoarthritis of the back and neck and is bedridden at their home.

Could somebody from Charlotte tell me where this museum is located? We lived in Charlotte quite a few years ago, and if I remember right, they had placed Billy Graham’s house on the grounds of Jim Baker’s complex.

However, there is no mention of how Graham's close ties with Nixon had cast a shadow on the minister.

They like had to throw this in, didn't they? Graham was also close to LBJ.

fercryinoutloud, if anybody needs a spiritual advisor, it's the President of the United States. Grahams ministering to corrupt men (and women) didn't corrupt him.

So Nixon was a disgrace, and Clinton (the impeached) was not...doesn’t make a lot of sense unless you’re a journalist. (end/sarcasm)

I went to the same college (Wheaton College) just a few years after he did, and I worked on the student newspaper with his sister-in-law, Ginny Bell. Having lived in Wheaton all my life, I heard him preaching and saw him around town for many years. He is a living saint.

Clinton must have been wearing a special space age fire repellant suit. Otherwise what kept him from bursting into flames when Reverend Graham shook his hand.

I have been a big-time Billy fan for decades, and I am appalled that a discussion of Mr. Graham has to involve posting about Clinton and condoms.

If the Grahams can tolerate him today, I would hope that we could as well.

Shame on those who take the opportunity for cheap shots on Mr. Clinton on Billy’s day.

I’ve seen Billy Graham on TV for the last 35 or so years. He is a gentleman in the fullest sense of the word. He is also a strong advocate for Christ.
