Michelle Obama has a few gripes about her husband, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, and she's not shy about sharing them with thousands of people she doesn't know.
He doesn't put his worn socks in with the dirty clothes. He's worse than a 5-year-old at making the bed. And after he eats, he doesn't put away the butter.
"Today, he still didn't put the butter up after he made his breakfast. I was like, 'You're just asking for it, you know I'm giving a speech. Why don't you just put the butter up?'" she told a roaring crowd at a recent Chicago fundraiser for women backing her husband's campaign.
It's the sort of intimate ribbing that makes a famous person seem more regular, and observers say it helps humanize the first-term senator from Illinois who has shot to political stardom.
DePaul University marketing professor Bruce Newman, who has written several books on political marketing, sees the teasing as a strategy for Obama, through his wife, to appeal to professional women who might otherwise vote for one of his chief rivals for the nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
By joking about his domestic foibles, Michelle Obama is showing herself as a woman who doesn't kowtow to her husband, he said.
"It's a clever strategy. I think it's very wise," Newman said.
It might even earn him some points with men, said Harvard University's Thomas Patterson, a professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Mrs. Barak ... packaged by Rats as a kinda, sorta Laura ... in stark contrast to Rodham and Teresa ...
I don’t mind Mrs. Barak as long as she is not talking politics.
So he’s spoiled and lazy?
For not being leftist enough for her?
awwwww isn’t that cute
Call me petty. But my husband and I do not EVER make those kind of comments in public. We never run one another down or disparage marriage.
We have our differences, of course, we do. And I wouldn’t imagine anyone thinking that I kowtow to him.
The idea that mocking someone’s faults “humanizes” them is simply foreign to me.
Ah, how fun it will be to watch Barry O get smacked down by two ‘womyn’!

No one has even brought up that it may not be true. Hillary loves to spin fabulous tales for different audiences. "Little white lies", the type that the Libs at Snopes will let pass and not ding a candidate (D) for telling.
Lucky him.
I don’t know, I take it as more humorous than serious. I think it is a display of her personality more than a statement about their marriage. I find her funny. I find their politics appalling.
Last week the AP was quoting Mrs. Bambi Obama as saying she has a big mouth. Now they quote her as saying hubby is bad at putting butter away. I remember when they tried to make Hillary seem human too and it ain’t working this time either.
Sounds like another Teresa Heinz...without the arthritis “remedy”.
She tells him he looks like a Mack truck going down the road with both doors open.
Anyway, my impression is that we are seeing the real Michelle. She is a firecracker. We won't win any points by making too much of it. Most people will find it humorous. Even I do, and there is a zero percent chance I will vote for her husband.
His whole day is spent "buttering up" people. He has no reason to ever put it away.
Oh, cool, belittling your husband as a way to get the feminist vote. Sure to appeal to those of us who respect our husbands. And to husbands? I would think NOT.
