Churches have no more authority to ignore state law or enforce their own law than anyone else in a civilized society. We settled that one once and for all with Henry II and Thomas A Becket.

Apparently not, because that’s what they are doing and the Feds are too scared of public reaction to go busting into churches.

function of a President is to enforce laws enacted by Congress, not to selectively ignore those with which he disagrees. Bush’s actions in this regard exceed incompetence, in his collaboration with the Mexican authorities

Come on, ZULU, illegals have been coming here for decades. It might be trendy to blame Bush for everything that’s wrong with the country, but this instance is a bit of a stretch, dontcha think? In fact, it was Reagan who handed out the first amnesty.

reduce the infux of Mexicans and make sure new arrivals come from every part of the world

Good luck. People immigrate from poor parts of the world so your arrivals are pretty much limited to third world countries, and all the backwards cultural baggage they bring. You don’t see too many Europeans or Japanese knocking at our doors.

the Administration which seeks to create a permanent class of exploited, disinfranchised peons to serve the corporate interests it panders to, and people like yourself whose sympathies are misplaced and views on this subject are exceedingly myopic

Ah, yes, all my fault and those almighty corporate interests, eh? It’s always the big guy who’s at fault, never the average voter. You might want to consider your fellow citizens, unaffiliated with corporate interests or the administration, who’s happy enjoying cheap restaurant service, cheap landscaping and cheap housekeeping and who doesn’t give a squat who’s doing the work as long as it’s at the right price.

I think its more of a policy decision by an administration wedded to this philosophy. If the government is selectively afraid to enforce existing laws, why should people obey any of them?

Yes, they have. But one President gave an order to shoot them if they crossed the border - I can’t remember which one. But NEVER before to my knowledge has any administration so pandered to the Mexican government and corporate interests so as to allow an army of these people into America. 10% of Mexico lives here already and Bush is pushing for MORE!!

As to Reagan, that was supposed to be a one time amnesty, the bill contained legal teeth to go after employers who hired illegals as well as other restrictions and those were totall ignored - a warning about the alleged teeth in the new amensty bill.

I don’t think people who are poor are garbage and I have no problem letting them in here if they come in legally and we have jobs for them AND THEY WANT TO STAY HERE AND BECOME AMERICANIZED AND LEARN ENGLISH AND OUR CULTURE. And we do get a lot of technical people coming here. A lot of medical people are coming in from the Phillippines and Asia where they still teach science and history instead of politically correct pablum and basket-weaving in their colleges, and where work-ethics are still practised in schools as well as on the job.

They are all in it together. But the corporate interests and Chambers of Commerce are the grease lubricating the wheels in Washington, not some landscaper with a handfull of Mexicans. But you are right on this and I don’t disagree with you. I avoid eating at restaurants as I worked in the food industry, and also because I know these people have standards of hygiene not at a paar with our own and also can carry diseases I can’t spell let alone pronounce. I do my own landscaping and clean my own house and I DO CARE about whose doing my work. More Americans should. We have become too lazy and affluent for our own good.
