Word is leaking that the GOP in the Senate are on the verge of agreeing to an immigration bill that has --as a concession to the GOP-- less than half of the fencing promised by law last year.
White flag time on the border, and a national security and thus a political disaster.
The GOP are sending around talking points attempting to make this "compromise" defensible, but it won't and shouldn't fly. Agreeing to it takes the party down the tubes on the issue of border security --because it doesn't provide what the public understands to be border security, a very long, very high fence with a very wide gate.
This is McCain's continuing gift to the GOP, and the immigration absolutists' legacy: Lots and lots of promises and no fence worth calling a fence.
Aren't there 41 GOP senators willing to fight for border security? Apparently not. And they will see the result in their depleted coffers and diminished numbers come November '08. All they have to do is fight for border security, but they won't even do that.

This is part of the deal to Gonzales and stop the antiwar bills. The dems will pick it up and still BOHICA the stupid Reps.
They think they are doing good, and that is the damn problem.

From the looks of things, the deal is done. We were sold out by both parties on the immigration issue.
The good conservatives that would fight this scourge, will never be given a chance to win.

I had hoped this insanity had been killed with that first attempt last year of that wretched piece of proposed legistlation that was finally killed. Reading that was more frightening than Hillary Clinton in the White House....
And now the insanity and anti-Americanism is back. These dysfunctional fools want to destroy this country just to sweep this horrid issue under the rug....to make their little perverted lives nice and clean gain....poof, amnesty makes the illegal issue all go away, right???
They are in for a rude awakening if they do this.
You got to hand it to Bush/Rove.
For worked for years to create the situation where a trade off on one side for amnesty and new worker programs, and on the other for enforcing the already present laws seems like a “compromise” rather than extortion.
Bush and Rove will be well-paid with speaking fees after 2008.

The border must be sealed...if they do this and don’t seal the border, this country is shafted. A gutless government, a bunch of fools, are setting us up for a huge demographic and national security fall....

It was IF EVERYONE VOTES, THEY CANT CHEAT or something like that. Basically it tells everyone to ignore the small conservative issues like guns, abortion, etc in an effort to retain the Republican majority. Well, we know what happened with that.
Conservatives will do better for themselves in the long run by separating themselves from the socialist Republicans and form their own party.

The GOP is committing political suicide and destroying the country at the same time. I hope all that cheap labor is worth it.
Ok, I am going to show my ignorance but for the life of me I can not see the angle for Bush to support amnesty and not closing the border. It can’t be for votes. It can’t be for the Republican party at large. The only conclusion I can come up with is he is profiting financiallly or he really believes in an open border. What do you all think? This seems like such an obvious issue: closing the border and having organized, systemic immigration is good for all sides. The chaos we have now is bad for all sides.
It may be time to consider other possible explanations for this behavior.

I think we realize it goes way beyond simple incompetence. The agendas in play (and we are very familiar with the ones in the White House) are numerous. It really became clear that they were working for themselves well over a decade ago, and no longer the American public that put them there. No, it is about power, control and elitist international trade-based agendas, utopian swill that involves anything but running the United States of America for its people and its purpose. And throw in protecting the Constitution — that is becoming a real party joke nowadays....
