A Disaster: The GOP Caves On Border Security
HughHewitt.com ^ | 5/16/07 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 05/16/2007 4:14:04 PM PDT by pissant

Word is leaking that the GOP in the Senate are on the verge of agreeing to an immigration bill that has --as a concession to the GOP-- less than half of the fencing promised by law last year.

White flag time on the border, and a national security and thus a political disaster.

The GOP are sending around talking points attempting to make this "compromise" defensible, but it won't and shouldn't fly. Agreeing to it takes the party down the tubes on the issue of border security --because it doesn't provide what the public understands to be border security, a very long, very high fence with a very wide gate.

This is McCain's continuing gift to the GOP, and the immigration absolutists' legacy: Lots and lots of promises and no fence worth calling a fence.

Aren't there 41 GOP senators willing to fight for border security? Apparently not. And they will see the result in their depleted coffers and diminished numbers come November '08. All they have to do is fight for border security, but they won't even do that.

UPDATE: Here are the draft talking points from the GOP. Four pages of crap:

BORDER SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION REFORM

Republicans Standing Together to Fight for Tougher Enforcement and an Immigration System That Better Serves American Interests

As negotiations continue, Republicans are demanding the following from the Democrat majority:

* Beefed-up border security. Republicans are insisting on dramatic and immediate improvements to border security, including 18,000 Border Patrol agents and 370 miles of fencing, as part of a continuous effort to protect the borders.

*Republicans insist that border security improvements must be completed before other reforms can occur. Democrats blocked any "triggers" in last year’s bill.

Duncan Hunter has done more against illegal immigration than 20 Tancredos.

Hugh always makes me think of what you get when you cross Eddie Haskell and a teacher’s pet. A combination that ought to put your teeth on edge.

By George...I think he's got it!

The sad thing is that there is a very good chance of this.

“Fred, we are talking real world politics.”

Do you really think the opposition will just forget Guiliani’s record?

Guiliani is a dangerous lib.

No, Rudy is one of those Republicans that fit under Ronald Reagan`s tent. Mr Reagan didn`t think that Rudy was dangerous, he hired him.

I’m all but convinced the Republican party WANTS the Democrats running the country (into the ground). Either that, or our politicians want to undo the results of 1865 and reinstitute an economy based upon slavery of brown skinned people.

Either way, they’re idiots.

I’m worried that by 2009 it will be too late for President Hunter to enforce the borders, protect us from the islamofascists, and confront China. It seems the current administration will have completely sold out the country by then.

At what point do we seriously consider supporting impeachment, just to tie all these nuts up in knots and prevent them from doing more harm to the country? I’d much rather have the gridlock of impeachment proceedings for the next year than what the current politicians in D.C. are accomplishing.

Despite this abortion of a bill, we cannot tie the president’s hands up. Iraq, Afganistan and the WOT must be won.

We are in China (not trading; not making money; not shipping goods to the USA, by the way).

Would someone tell me please . . .

Are many Americans who believe in border security running off the bumper stickers, sacrificing some hard-earned money to put ads in papers, put placards in their yards, or anything??? I mean is their any common movement growing up to secure our national borders?

I have a house in the USA, and I own the empty lot next to it, too, and I am thinking about having someone put some large signs up there against this most current trash legislation and demanding the sealing up of our borders.

Are any others doing anything of the sort? Our liberties will not be preserved without some sacrifice. We must inform our soap opera-addicted neighbors.

“No, Rudy is one of those Republicans that fit under Ronald Reagan`s tent.”

A gun-grabbing, rabid pro-abort, fit under that tent?

“Mr Reagan didn`t think that Rudy was dangerous, he hired him.”

As a lower-level LAWYER in the DOJ. Nothing more.

Rudy is dangerous. He holds the US Constitution in contempt. That makes him “scum”, in my book.

Well that does it for me. We’re selling out our country to the illegals and there are no conservatives left it appears to stop this. I doubt there is anyone left to vote for.

Ain`t it great, we “conservatives” stopped Rudsy and after eight years, we`ll stop Hillorat`s VP, Obammama, we hope

I would completely agree if I was convince the President was fighting the WOT to win. I don't think he is. He seems far more interested in "not losing", than in actually winning. He hamstrings himself.

I’m with Coulter for Hunter...unless Newt throws his hat in the ring. Then I’ll have to do some comparison shopping.

Not only that, GWB doesn’t seem to have a clue as to how to win. He seems befuddled that things went sour quickly in Iraq after May 2003, when he proclaimed “Mission accomplished!”

It may be an overstatement to say that Giuliani holds the Constitution in contempt. He actually backs those parts of the Constitution with which he agrees. He simply ignores the other parts, and they are many. He’s a cafeteria Constitution person like most of his NY base.

“Hugh Hewitt is an open borders person...I read it in one of this books.”

LOL, you are correct. He had an article recently at townhall about how stupid those of us that are against amnesty are. There were about a hundred comments following the article, almost all were against him.
