Various cars have various optimum speeds.

Mine is around 90-100 mph... I love BMWs...

§545.051 - DRIVING ON RIGHT SIDE OF ROADWAY

(b) An operator of a vehicle on a roadway moving more slowly than the normal speed of other vehicles at the time and place under the existing conditions shall drive in the right-hand lane available for vehicles, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, unless the operator is:
(1) passing another vehicle; or
(2) preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.

Getting an officer to enforce it is a whole different subject.

I'm probably older than you. What's your point?

The point is that you seem to be dismissing facts in a discourse you chose to enter merely because I misspoke my opening lines. That is not how conversations are used to refine understandings, at least not in polite society among educated people. Please recall that it is you who responded adversely to my statement, and with good reason. Now you are taking offense that I can defend my position merely by stating the conditions under which my assertionas are true. It is like you would prefer that your car can defy physics just because it is expensive and precious to you.

It has been suggested to me that the cop was more offended by my car than by how I was driving. I suppose that's possible...

I know exacly what you mean...

You are the one who fails to address the issues. I have asked several questions, and you have failed to answer them. Of course, to answer those questions you would either have to agree with me or expose your ignorance.

I have to laugh at you fools who pull a discussion into a side ditch and then insist others are evading issues because we choose not to follow you into the ditch. Invariably you claim that you have asked several questions to which we have not responded.

Let me make this clear one more time. Hopefully, some osmotic process will occur that will cause it to sink through your incredibly thick skull.

billbears said:

"And in actuality I get better gas mileage at 70 than I do at 55."

You responded:

"Physically impossible. Air drag increases with the cube of velocity."

I rebutted:

"Nonsense. My Jaguar XK8 is in sixth gear turning 2100 RPM at 90 MPH. It is in fifth gear turning 2800 RPM at 55. That's a simple matter of gearing and physics. My instantaneous fuel economy at 70 MPH on flat ground is around 35 MPG. At 55 it is around 26 MPG."

Either realizing that you had screwed up, or being completely clueless, you danced off on some tangent about the top of the RPM curve and wind resistance. Now you're excusing yourself with babble about "95% of all cars."

I repeat, your assertion that is is physically impossible for billbears' car (or my car or Spktyr's car) to get better fuel economy at 70 MPH than at 55 MPH is nonsense.

You are welcome to rant at length about wind drag and RPM curves, it is completely uninteresting to me and not germane to the point.

“It is never a good idea to piss off people of unknown temper and armament. Particularly not on a frequent basis.”

Advice should be heeded by agressive drivers. You assume because someone is obeying the law and doing the speed limit, they are unarmed.

Silly person.

Placing that sticker on your front windshield is a dumb idea.”

So is paying $29.95 for the sticker.

Someone has figured out another scheme to get rich on the frustrations of others.

Not silly at all.

His comment applies to everyone. I never make the assumption that anyone I meet on the street is unarmed, or is unbalanced for that matter.

The correct answer is of course, “Yield to faster traffic” It is common sense, and in many places the law.

You were no doubt reacting to his/her anecdote about “I ran him off into the grass median”, and tailored your comment accordingly. Whether what he claims what he did was warranted, appropriate, or correct is debatable, but the point he makes is undeniable (and applies to him as well): If you piss off the wrong person, you have little control of the consequences, and they might well be consequences that your surviving family members will rue.

As someone who drives professionally, I see all types. Some react better to stress than others. Most drivers are barely adequate to maneuver two tons of steel down the motorway, mush less do so while jawing on their phone, eating, applying makeup, etc. The last thing any of us occupying the road is someone deliberately provoking other occupants. The clown that boasts that he deliberately provokes other drivers is an idiot and an embarrassment to FreeRepublic.

Yhe “speedracer” types scare the hell outta me. He’s the one who insists on going 15-20 mph greater than the prevailing speed. In heavy traffic they must play a dangerous game of “Frogger”, weaving through the openings in traffic between lanes, often cutting off others. Why would any reasonable person impede a fool like this? I always move over and let them go by. I figure it’s better to have them out ahead of me where I can keep an eye on them, than behind me looking for a chance to get by.

This is not an accent to them that what they are doing is OK. This is certainly not bowing to another’s ego. This is simply street smarts.

We agree.

I shouldn’t have used “You”. I should have said the agressive driver should head your advice.

I used to be a somewhat agressive driver. I have mellowed with age. Now after my commute, I am never stressed out about the idiots that were in the way.

BTW, German drivers are meticulous in obeying in-town rules. A good lesson here for us untermenschen in Amerika.

I think Americans tend to question authority just a leeeeetle bit more than Germans. Certainly, more so than Germans around the time the Autobahn was built.

Democrat :)

I’ve made it a habit of thanking any driver that moves out of the way if I am faster (friendly hand wave), and in turn, to get out of the way of drivers that are faster than I am.

Oh I get it, it's that 'do unto others...' thing. What a concept!

The only person who drives your speed is you. Then, as George Carlin would say, there are the idiots, (the 49.9% drivers who are slower than you), and the maniacs, (the 49.9% of the drivers that are faster than you).

I liked the old Gallagher routine about how cops a doubly bad, because they normally drive the speed limit. And then when they catch people speeding, they speed up to catch them. What does this do? Doubles the number of cars going a dangerous speed.

“Back when I was much younger and shorter-tempered, I had a guy like you piss me off when I was already in a bad mood. I ran him off into the grass median”

We hope you’ve grown up since then.

Personally, I think it's inconsiderate to go 20-30 mph above the posted speed limit and then expect everybody to get out of your way.

The Rules have always been that the left lane is for PASSING. It's the FAST LANE. People that don't get out of the way are inconsiderate and selfish...or just ignorant of the law. By me giving them my gestures, they may learn the rules. I am doing my part.

LEFT LANE DRIVERS Otherwise known as tailgaters, speeders, and wreckless lane changers.

My husband has no problem going a little faster. He was in the HOV lane driving 5 or so over the limit. There was room for anyone to pass. But, some idiot decided to tailgate, then had to honk his horn and flip us off as he went around.

I know a lot of those on this thread would hate me. I finally have my permit, so drive the speed limit. On the bright side, I tend to stay to the right as much as possible, because I like a way out in case anything goes wrong.

A friend of my husband’s had a sticker on his Pontiac that said, “Catch me if you can”. He was pulled over. When the officer got to his car he just said, “Caught you.”
