If I get your example right, then it would be roughly $2K (pending 2-3% annual increases since 2000).
The real question is what the heck is our govt doing with all this money.

Locals can control local taxes to a degree. At the same time, locals demand gov’t services, so while those who want lower taxes might not be the same ones who want more services there is the chance for interesting elections.
And to those people who think it is ‘not fair’ because my property taxes are lower than theirs....bugger off, life is not fair! ;)
A-freakin'-men. The whiners should get off their asses and un-elect some worthless, air wasting, sacks-of-crap politicians. They'd better do it quick too, before the benny receivers exceed 50% and are able to vote themselves unlimited, perpetual largess til the nation rots on the vine...
As a matter of fact, several years back when I lived in Polk County, we threw out all of the county commissioners that voted behind our back for a local gas tax. The only one that was re-elected did not vote for the tax.
Fast forward a couple of years. The ALL REPUBLICAN board we voted in to replace these tax and spend clowns then turned around and passed a 27% property tax increase, which BTW applied to all of the recently inflated land values. Combining for a substantial tax increase.
Sorry if I view the notion that throwing the bums out will amount to much. I just sold my property and left. Personally, I think it is time for some serious civil disobedience.

If you don't like the taxes in Florida, there are 49 other states and countless countries to move to! As an alternative, if you can adopt the concept that homes are to be lived in and not merely "investments"..., go with the flow! Your property taxes will seem quite moderate in 10-20 years (compared to that of your newly transplanted neighbors)!
Of course you must have due diligence, but that doesn’t mean the current tax system good public policy, does it? I imagine you think the status quo is great because you benefit from it. However, is it FAIR and is it GOOD PUBLIC POLICY? There is no reason we should continue implementing bad policy simply because it is already in place. In my opinion, first time home buyers effectively subsidizing longtime homeowners is NOT good public policy for all the reasons discussed in the posts above.
Furthermore, propery values are in no way related the the amount of money required to run the county. Therefore, county income should be rolled back to 2000-01 levels + reasonable increases for growth since that time. Increasing property values should not equate to a winfall for local governments.
All this squabbling over how to shift the burden around is exactly what the government wants. It ignores the problem that the burden is way too high.
What are they doing?
Iwill tell you. First off in the city of miramar florida where only 5-8 people go to city commision meetings heres what they did for the people of Miramar which is 5 blocks north to south by 4 miles east to west.
They spent 20 million to build a new city hall,with a monthly electric bill in excess of 5000 dollars a mmonth.
They invoked a $130 per year surtax to build 16 more fire stations.Not bad for such a huge city?
Spent 5 million to build a new mediteranian style city garage.
3 million for a new police station why? Simple they had a roof leak and failed to fix it. During Hurricane Wilma they were to dumb to even put tarps on the roof.
Want more. Try building in this city it is up to you you will have too double the amount you will spend to do it. They have impact fees that are stagering unless you are a developer than you get what ever you want. Thats where all the tax money goes in this city
ps they have a 7 dollar per cell phone useage tax for all phones useng the zip code 33025.

But it absolutely amazes me that so many of us here are content to let others get screwed as long as we get screwed less. I got mine, so too bad for you. When the government shafts anyone, it's bad for all of us. Why? Because it's only a matter of time before we are the ones taking the hit.

I live just north of Orlando. My property tax AND my homeowners insurance combined are about $1900.00 a year.
I'm not moving anytime soon.
Agree. Property taxes are way to high most everywhere and for most all homeowners. That includes the never ending higher costs of insurance. These expenses should be minimal.
I can see someone paying 200 a year in property taxes or insurance. How they ever got up into the thousands per year is nothing short of outrageous. Of course like gasoline, food and everything else, it just keeps going up.
What ever happened to cost of living raises? I would imagine everyone would be making about $45. per hour by now just to keep up.
