Thomas Crapper did not invent the toilet, but in the late 1880s he did refine the inner workings of the toilet. Archaeologists have found evidence of toilets used nearly 5,000 years ago in an area north of Scotland and in parts of what is now Pakistan. In 1596, Sir John Harington created a flush toilet for Queen Elizabeth I. He is the reason we sometimes call the toilet "the john."
