What happened to one man one vote?

Thanks very much - every effort is worthwhile. One email, call, letter stands for 100 others who don’t communicate...but who are viewing the same issue with “concern”.

The writers of the Constitution saw, in their wisdom, I believe, the need to provide fairness with the Presidential election as stated elsewhere on this thread.

Do you think LA, NYC, Chicago should dictate who wins the Presidency?

“(i.e. we could end up with a true whack job as President)”

I wonder if the House would have chosen Jimmy Carter?

” Also, voter fraud is easier to pull off in huge metropolitan areas”

You mean this might actually force the GOP to monitor election fraud in metro areas, something they have rarely done?

Here are some Newspapers who support these measures to do away with the Electoral College:

New York Times (2007)

New York Times (2006)

Chicago Sun-Times

Minneapolis Star Tribune

Los Angeles Times

Enough said, IMHO.

The GOP can only monitor voter fraud if they have election workers to do that job! VOLUNTEERS.

Very few VOLUNTEERS want to monitor certain voting places unless they can come armed and/or with many co-volunteers.

Eliminating electoral college is a plain & simply invitation to stealing elections by fraud. All you need is a little more corruption than you already have in Demonrat strongholds, a little more creative ballot reading and get-out-the-dead-vote, and you can kiss “democracy” good-bye.

“Do you think LA, NYC, Chicago should dictate who wins the Presidency?”

No, I think the voters should, wherever they live. People on this thread have this fantasy about how the large states vote. What did Bush lose CA by? 5-6%? And he didn’t even campaign here.

I thought EC votes were apportioned by population?

This movement is being launched not by Republicans across this country but by Dems who are FURIOUS that President Bush won in 2000 despite supposedly not winning the popular vote. OF course he won the popular non-fraud vote. Throw in the voter fraud in Illinois, Washington State, California, and some others and he "lost" the popular vote.

And in case you missed it - voter fraud is almost impossible to prove - and to punish - and so they do it with impunity! I see the electoral college process as protecting against voter fraud....one of the last roadblocks to total vote corruption.

Let's see these same legislatures pass measures requiring a PHOTO ID when registering to vote and when voting! HA they care NOTHING about one man one vote. They care ONLY about whatever gets them into power - including voter fraud to the max.

Too true ... we are a nation of individuals states formed in a union ... I’ve tried to explain this to my Australian girlfriend ... she thinks we’re all the same country ... I told her that Australia was divided into five states whereas in the United States each state/territory asked admittance into a union of states ... basically each state is a separate country ... loosely speaking .....

You're not looking at the upside. I think CA has like 52 electoral votes. Gore and Kerry got all of them. If we went by the popular vote, Bush would have gotten 46%-47% of all of CA votes in his column. Close for NY as well.

People look at this like it's a disaster, I see it as positive. True, Gore might have won but then again Nixon would have defeated Kennedy. It cuts and benefits both ways, it's more a draw than people believe.

I’m still furious Nixon lost to Kennedy in ‘60.

Yes, but they are trying to pass this State by State as it will change the Constitution - and it's much less "visible" to the American people that this is going on.

So, hope you will be contacting your State Senators/Reps if this is going on in your state - are you NC voter?

“Yes, but they are trying to pass this State by State as it will change the Constitution...”

The founding fathers creating provisions under which the Constitution could be changed.

Are you saying they were nuts to do so?

This was so very true before the War between the States. While finishing off slavery was a positive, the reconstruction era essentially abolished Statehood. We all lost when that happened.

"Eliminating the Electoral College is a Hillary dream come true."

But what's the value in the EC system anyway? It was originally instituted in a communications-challenged world because it was assumed that ordinary folks were too isolated to wisely choose a President from another distant state, so it was entrusted to electors to be their agants in finding the best man. Th EC serves no serious purpose now.

And why not the French system?

They actually do a few things intelligently in France, like elections (governing is something else). Imagine an Election on the 5th of November and Inauguration Day on the 15th. That's what the French do: No muss no fuss no hanging chad idiocies. I love politics, but I'm a little weary of spending 40% of my life in an election campaign cycle.

I wish one of the big late primary states that right now DON'T MATTER would pass a law mandating that henceforth their primary would be held 12 months before New Hampshire or the Iowa Caucus, whichever comes first just to bust the idiocy wide open.

Can you explain the superiority of the “winner take all” system in state electoral college vote distribution?
