Quite a few of the civvie contractors in Iraq had this same kind of thing happen to them. One guy’s wife informed him she was getting a divorce less than a month after he arrived (three kids, very nice new house).
I heard through the grapevine of several checking accounts being raided, and vaguely recall one instance of the house being sold without his knowledge. Some guys were so wiped out that they had to extend their time in Iraq to avoid complete bankruptcy.
I wouldn’t say it was “common”, but it did happen in all too many cases.
My brother having served, my father and myself having served, we too, all 3 have gotten the t-shirt.
If anyone ever thinks soldiers don't deserve our respect, well, they've never sacrificed anything except for themselves.
Then again, their are some GI's that aren't too much to brag about neither.
