It was just short of a train wreck. No to mention watching last night they showed Laura Bush explaining the dining room, etc. on CSPAN and she was talking about having more than a few of the Bush family for lunch with the Queen. All I could think about listening to her was rushed calls to the family, "Hey y'all come to lunch. The Queen's coming, no seriously. But dress up 'cause we're bringing out the fine paper plates and having ham samwichs instead of bologna."

And I'll get flamed for hell about this but except for Her Majesty, Prince Phillip, and Colin Powell it just looked like everyone was dressed up to go to the cotillion down at the Crawford Country Club. A very stark reminder that tradition trumps power

Pomposity to impress the little people or each other.

Should have had a hog roast and a kegger. Would have had more fun. Tequila jello shots... mud rasslin.

You said, in part: A very stark reminder that tradition trumps power

Tradition is wonderful. We have traditions here in the US too. And when you come to this country, our traditions control over those one may bring here from abroad. As for power, the British certainly welcomed our power in WWII, and didn’t refuse the use of our power in the name of any sort of tradition.
