In 1978, George W. Bush was defeated in a bid for a West Texas Congressional seat by Kent Hance, a conservative Democrat (there were such people in those days). Hance emphasized his roots in West Texas and the fact that he graduated from Texas Tech, vs. Bush’s Connecticut birth and education (boarding school and Yale). After that defeat, Bush determined that he would not be “out-Texaned” again.
