Fred Thompson, the former Republican senator from Tennessee who plays a prosecutor on televisions Law and Order and is watching his own popularity grow from his seat on the sidelines of a presidential campaign that he hasnt even joined yet, is making it clear what he makes of Democrats in the great Iraq war debate.
As far as the Democrats, they are adhering to the extent they can to the most left wing element of their base, Thompson said in an interview shown on the Fox News Channels Hannity and Colmes last night. You know, Moveon.org and those folks are running the Democratic party.
And they're taking extremist positions and doing extremist things, Thompson said. (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid is doing things that I think the American people are going to reject. They're as near to investing in defeat of their own country than anything I've ever seen, and I don't think the American people will forgive them for that. So, they're going through that exercise, and let's just let them go, let's just give them a little rope and see what they do.
And he had this to say about the Republican Partys own labeling of the defeatist Democrats in Congress: Our name-calling and harping on them right now is kind of wasted effort as far as I'm concerned.
Thompson says he will take his time in deciding whether to seek the Republican nomination for president, with polls showing that his name-recognition could provide him with an instant entrée to the race.

I think this is our best choice for President.
talk is cheap Fred.
are you in or out?
I think he is in. But he’s not going to be campaigning on the trail like most politicians - he’s doing an internet thing that his wife and campaign is putting together.
To be honest I don’t think he can handle the rigors of being on the campaign trail. He looked pretty worn out and old last night. His brain is sharp as a tack though. He has a good sense of humor too.
not in.
Fred Thompson speaks my language as well. What I would like to see him take on is the mind-set of the Democrats who want to let the United Nations run this country and who treat every attack on us as a police matter. I’ve been thinking along those lines since George Tenant’s book came out. Everyone, including the Democrats, believed that Iraq was harboring and training the enemy, but their approach to this was to treat it as a police matter under the direction of the United Nations. We can’t let the Democrats get control!
The best thing about Fred Thompson, IMO? He is not a career politician. He doesn’t care about what history books say. His interest is in the state of this Union. I believe he has the honesty and integrity to lead the nation now and in the future. I think he might also be likeable enough and articulate enough to win over some folks.
I still don’t know enough about him to be sure. But I like the fact that he is not falling all over himself to try and be noticed.
i agree... if he were not going to run, he would have made that clear by now...
Lots of Chicago moonbat comments follow the article at the link. Thompson clearly makes their heads explode. LOL!
After watching Fred discuss Hannitys question about destiny playing a part in his running, I’d say there is no doubt that he’s going to announce.
i think this is one sign of a true leader... he doesn't need to say, "hey--look at me!" the people are already looking at him... he's already the center of attention by just minding his own business, going about his life... the people are coming to him... he is being "called." the presidency is choosing him... with all the other candidates, they are running after the presidency...
Why in the world “must” he be in or out right now? It’s a thing of beauty. He’s becoming more popular each day without being an official candidate. Why mess with success? I think he will be in at the right time. As long as he is doing all the right things behind the scenes (raising money, lining up support and campaign talent) I’m fine with that.
If Thompson gets in, it will change the whole dynamics of 2008 and Democrats know it - and they fear it.
He is playing the media like a fiddle
I’m with you! good point!
Did you know that Fred is barely two years older than Rudy? LOL!!
I didn’t see worn out or old last night. I guess appearances are in the eye, opinion, preferences and biases of the beholder...
Fred has already said his approach to campaigning will be less “frenetic”. That doesn’t automatically equate to weak and tired by any stretch. Purposeful, deliberate, with wise use of resources is what it means.
Is it really going to be necessary for Fred to visit Iowa 14 times? The answer is a big fat NO, because he’ll get his message out effectively in a third of that number.
Fred’s already putting in long days (14 hours I read) with filming, radio gig etc. Not bad, not bad at all.
I’m pretty sure Fred is going to be my choice if he runs. I love him pointing out the “defeatists” like Reid. He carries himself very well and appears to be more conservative than most. The thing I really like is that he reminds me of Reagan in inspiring a positive attitude about America. Quite opposite from ALL liberals who want us to feel like downtrodden sheeple who are causing all the worlds problems. God, I hate these defeatist bastards.
He knows it is a long time until elections and he can wait as long as is needed until the rest have peaked out.
I enjoy a good laugh too, but he’s making me cry by putting off his decision to run. Sadist.

Good point, when IS the deadline for declaring candacy in the 2008 elections? I would think that it’s not until late this year.
Anyone Know?
