A WOMAN'S email to the help desk of Telecom New Zealand was rejected by a computer system because her name was Gay and "inappropriate for business-like communication".
Gay Hamilton, from the northern South Island town of Nelson, said while she was actually gay, she was concerned that the country's biggest public company was spending its time and resources on trifling issues, the Herald on Sunday reported.
"If they do have to put content filters on, then maybe they should ensure that it only gets genuinely abusive words," she said.

The same thing they do with women named Ophelia. And don't ask about poor Cock Robin.
He actually changed his last name from “Gay” to “Gaye” to make it look more upperclass and tony.
This is what happens when 1 hi-jacks a perfectly innocuous word.
PC being what it is, within 20 years “they” will declare “GAY” a pejorative and will come up with a new term to describe themselves.
Wonder what word from Webster’s they’ll hi-jack next?
Good point.
The name "Cherry" and all derivatives such as Cherie, Cheri, etc. is now deemed inappropriate for businesslike communication.
It's still OK for strippers, though.
yes and he was shot to death by his dad, Marvin Gay Sr.
Yet another thing to add to my plan for corporate operations. All Human Resources departments should be downsized until they are merely Personnel Offices again. When they became Human Resources they forgot that their primary purpose is to make sure that the payroll and insurance records are accurate.
My favorite story about President Lyndon B. Johnson was when he told one of his aides: “Dammit, just when I learned to pronounce ‘Negro’ properly, they up and changed it to ‘black’ !”
Exactly a prime example of what I meant.
(Don’t get me going on “African-American”....)
It’s already happened. The peers of my 15-year old son all use the word “gay” as a universal insult or slur. It’s the opposite of “sweet” or “tight”
I have an aunt named ‘Gay’. It must be hell to go through life with a name like that. I think I would go by my middle name or something. Of course, once upon a time Gay meant happy.
At this company I used to work for there was a guy named Buddy Fagg. He got mail rejected all the time by our spam filters. We had to eventually whitelist his receiving address. lol
What about “Rump Wrangler”? Is that still cool for business usage?
I've read a couple of biographies and it seems that his father was a very sadistic man who treated Marvin Junior viciously when he was a small boy.
When Marvin Jr. became a successful musician, his father discounted his success and disparaged his achievements mercilessly during family gatherings.
Then, when Marvin Jr.'s career went into a tailspin (partly due to his own failings, partly due to revenge on the part of others) he was forced to move back into his parents' home, where his father taunted him mercilessly.
This time, however, Marvin Jr. was stronger than his father physically and able to strike back harder when his father struck him.
One day, Marvin Jr. gave his father a thrashing, and his humiliated father got his handgun and blew him away.
Horrible family dynamic.
People have used it as a sort of pejorative for a long time. To me, in that context, “gay” means “goonie”, “stupid”, “silly”, etc.
It’s just not really acknowledged yet. The homos still love that word.
At a large aerospace company we had an HR person - Joe Gay, and an engineer Harry Beavers - Needless to say before PC, they took a lot of ribbing - and I don’t mean from Trojans.
We go back to gay meaning happy and we call homosexuals, homosexuals.
Problem solved
Better yet. Let's call them "Sodomites" and "Abominations" which is what they are.
