If legislators with too much time on their hands and not enough to do decide to mandate a requirement that bans incandescent bulbs,

They get their marching orders from the internationalist institutions and transnational corporations now. It has nothing to do with too much time on their hands and everything to do with advancing globalism and America's loss of freedom is part of that agenda.

What really drives up cost for our home is two 15000k Halide bulbs used on our 150 gal salt water aquarium.

“Not only did they not last as long as the average incandescent bulb,..”

You either had some seriously flawed CFLs or some amazing incandescent. The first CFLs I put in have already lasted much, much longer any regular bulb ever did.

Doesn't the mercury get used up during the normal lifespan of the lamp?

My understanding is that the mercury is pretty much absorbed into the glass at that point so a broken bulb is not as dangerous. The mercury can still be recovered and reused though.

puts out a horrible harsh light, instead of the warm glow we are use to.

Incandescent light is similar to sunlight and light from a wood fire, something we're naturally used to. The love of firelight is in our genetics. Most people consider a fireplace to be romantic. Before the invention of the light bulb if you didn't like sitting next to a fire you didn't pass on your genes. Florescent light is artificial and unnatural, not something I want in my home. I never liked the cold alien feel of it. Maybe LED technology can recreate a warm fire light.

CFL’s cannot be used in sockets where heat will rise and be captured around the base. No ceiling fixtures, tracklamps, etc.

Not true. Hg volatilizes at STP. Typically, contamination is found testing the air.

Nope, Hg is the “platform” for the fluorescence. it isn’t used up at all.

When exposed to an electric charge, Hg electrons are energized out of their normal orbit. Upon returning to their orbit, the excess energy is given offf as light (white). Sodium vapor lamps do the same and give off a “yellow-orange” light.

Try this LED bulb if that is the effect you are looking for. I'm about to order some.

Turn any bedside lamp, hallway or ceiling light into an energy efficient accent light! The mild radiance of the Sun's Dusk bulb creates a gentle glow that reminds us of the setting sun. The soft yellow light is ideal where you wish for mood setting illumination. The 18 LEDs use only 1.4 watts and work great with dimmer switches. Two-year warranty.

“CFL’s cannot be used in sockets where heat will rise and be captured around the base. No ceiling fixtures, tracklamps, etc.”

Cletus.D.Yokel, you are joking, are you not?

If this is accurate, then serious warning labels would have to be plastered on these suckers. A significant portion of lightbulbs are put into ceiling fixtures; if it’s not safe, then this should have been hammered into people’s heads when the enviro propaganda for CFLs first began. A highly publicized campaign to replace all the incandescent bulbs in your house in order to save mankind that failed to mention the exclusion of ceiling fixtures would be a target for class action lawsuits when the first houses burn down as a result. Trial lawyers of the world, wake up, your gravy train is leaving the station.

So I take it that CDY is being sarcastic? Can someone who really knows the engineering here clarify?

“Sound crazy?”

The idea is not to be rational; the idea is to be different - and thus to demonstrate yet again the narcissistic self-regard which characterizes the perpetual adolescents of the Boomer generation.

My own experiences with these CFLs have drive my wife and I back to incandescent bulbs. Not only did they not last as long as the average incandescent bulb, we had experiences with them actually starting to smolder in the socket when they died.

I have had nothing but positive results from CFLs. I replace 5 outdoor floods with CFLs 6 years ago that are in a canopy under the front door at my business. Even though they said not to use with a photocell that was on the circut I used them anyway. These lights come on every day when the sun goes down and shut off with the morning sun. In the 6 years I've only recently had to replace one, the other 4 are still working. Prior to using CFLs the regular floods I had been using never lasted even one year.

CFL’s are not for use in enclosed fixtures. What he might have done is installed them into ones like them. Heat will cause the life expectancy to drop dramatically.

No, I’m serious. Every CFL I’ve ever purchased has a worning sticker on it that says the bulb should not be installed with the base above the light source.

"not for use in enclosed fixtures"

thanks for memory ping. That is the warning I recall, now. Sorry for any further confusion.

Why didn’t she just clean it up and move on. She’s an idiot for even mentioning it to someone in the first place.
