Giuliani: Republicans will keep you safe Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani flashed his combative side on a stop in New Hampshire yesterday, Newsday reported this morning.
At issue, apparently, was a questioner who said there were no rights left for Americans in the fight against terror.
Thats hardly no rights! Giuliani shot back, saying the war on terror demanded tools like the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping, the newspaper reported. You live in a country that has more rights than any in the history of the world. You have more freedom than anyone in the world has ever had, and no one has taken that from you.
According to the online site Politico, Giuliani also said if a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001. But if a Republican is elected, he said, especially if it is him, terrorist attacks can be anticipated and stopped.
That drew this response, this morning, from Democratic presidential candidate and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama:
Rudy Giuliani today has taken the politics of fear to a new low and I believe Americans are ready to reject those kind of politics. Americas mayor should know that when it comes to 9/11 and fighting terrorists, America is united. We know we can win this war based on shared purpose, not the same divisive politics that question your patriotism if you dare to question failed policies that have made us less secure. I think we should focus on strengthening our intelligence, working with local authorities and doing all the things we havent yet done to keep Americans safe. The threat we face is real, and deserves better than to be the punchline of another political attack.
Hillary Clinton issued this statement, with no direct reference to Giuliani:
There are people right now in the world, not just wishing us harm but actively planning and plotting to cause us harm. If the last six years of the Bush Administration have taught us anything, its that political rhetoric wont do anything to quell those threats. And that America is ready for a change.
One of the great tragedies of this Administration is that the President failed to keep this country unified after 9/11. We have to protect our country from terrorism it shouldnt be a Democratic fight or a Republican fight. The plain truth is that this Administration has done too little to protect our ports, make our mass transit safer, and protect our cities. They have isolated us in the world and have let Al Qaeda regroup. The next President is going to be left with these problems and will have to do what it takes to make us safer and bring Democrats and Republicans together around this common mission of protecting our nation. That is exactly what has to be done and what I am ready to do.
That’s why our borders are closed and secure. (sarc)
Some have tried. Like you, Rudy. Taking guns away from long-time permit holders. And wanting to seize cars of those acquitted of drunk driving. Just for starters
I'm much more worried about a control-freak autocrat like you than the Patriot Act.
I Don’t care how much Rudy crap you post, He will never get my vote.
The Democrats are a joke. There is not one effort to protect this country that has been supported by the Democratic base. Obama and Clinton both know this. And the Clinton Administration was a singular failure in protecting this country from terrorism, as Bill Clinton, Sandy Berger, and their ilk well know.
Based on their record, the Democrats should be laughed out of town.
knows he’s losing support.....time to instill a little fear.
I must give Rudy his props for his Lincoln Day speech in the great state of New Hampster. We need to hear those words come from a lot more Republicans, in voices too loud to ignore. No doubt in my mind that Rudy has the WOT issue covered. Now if we could only be sure on the rest of his positions.
Unless you're a fetus, ay Rudy?
I like Fred and I hear Duncan Hunter may be a great candidate too. I sure wish Duncan would move up in the polls. Maybe his supporters should try to sell him rather than attack the other candidates with the hopes that Duncan will win by default.
Strange words coming from a liberal.
YOu left out how he wanted to suspend NYC elections so he could stay on as Mayor after 9/11
Except gun grabbers like you rudy. No thanks.
Ping!!
“I’m not a real Republican, but I play one on TV.”
Or a gun owner, but if you're an illegal alien or a kongressman (he supported McCain/Feingold) then he'll do his best to keep you safe.
