Yes, but that’s not really a point in favor of slavery. You could say the same about almost *any* major historical phenomenon.

The more relevant point, I think, is that the descendents of slaves here in America are far better off than they would be in Africa. And, no, I am not claiming that that justifies slavery in any way. But then again, I don’t need to apologize because I am a Republican, hence I am on the side that fought slavery.

As for reparations for slavery, I think they ought to be considered, but on one condition: if you accept the reparations, you must leave the United States for the rest of your life. If you are not willing to do that, then shut up and start taking advantage of the opportunities all around you.

I am not arguing FOR slavery in any way. History has its funny twists and turns. One empire invades another, and their genetic history is altered forever. William the Conquerer invaded Britain in 1066, and a new people were forged. I am sure the Anglo Saxons at the time were against the invasion, but modern day Brits owe their existence to the invasion. African Americans, similarly, owe their existence to slavery. Its not that they would be living in West Africa today; they would not exist at all, anywhere. They had the superlative good fortune to be born in the United States of America, with all the opportunities and benefits associated with that. Slavery created that. THAT is their payoff.

So who do you propose gets reparations? Anybody who is black?

What about all those blacks who were slave owners?

Do they pay reparations? or is this only a one way street?
