a candidate that does not even come close to any conservative principles?

That may be true, but none of the other candidates even come close to having the numbers needed to win the Presidency in '08. I don't think people are supporting Rudy because they are liberal, they are supporting him because they feel they don't have much choice. Some Republican contenders are polling in single digits. Unless we come up with a dynamic, electable conservative, it's not looking good for us.

There's a technical term in political science for the sort of person who puts any stock in polls taken 9 months out from a primary. They're called "gullible."
