Car bomb kills 9 U.S. soldiers in Iraq [20 more wounded]

BAGHDAD - Nine U.S. soldiers were killed and 20 were wounded Monday in a suicide car bombing against a patrol base northeast of Baghdad, the military said.

An Iraqi civilian was also wounded in the attack on Task Force Lightning soldiers in Diyala province, a volatile area that has been the site of fierce fighting involving U.S. and Iraqi troops, Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.

Of the 20 wounded, 15 soldiers were treated and returned to duty while five others and the Iraqi were evacuated to a medical facility for further care, the military said.

Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.

It was the second bold attack against a U.S. base north of Baghdad in just over two months and was notable for its use of a suicide car bomber.

On Feb. 19, insurgents struck a U.S. combat post in Tarmiyah, about 30 miles north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and wounding 17 in what the military called a "coordinated attack."

It began with a suicide car bombing, then gunfire on soldiers pinned down in a former Iraqi police station, where fuel storage tanks were set ablaze by the blast.

Militants have mostly used hit-and-run ambushes, roadside bombs or mortars on U.S. troops and stayed away from direct assaults on fortified military compounds to avoid U.S. firepower.

I’m talking about the reaction in Iraq. For action, there is a reaction.
You’d see the Shiites in the South, who share the same brand of Islam with the Iranians, blow up in a rage that would make the current insurgency in Iraq look like a a sunny day in the park.

And have the terrorists control the whole Middle East and use 500 billions dollars of oil revenue to do terrorists attacks against us 100 times more destructive than 9/11 terrorists attacks and to balckmail our economy and the world economy into submission.

you have no idea what’s going on in Baghdad or Iraq for that matter. Good luck with things.

That's actually kind of funny kid...I was in Baghdad last August and September, third trip since the Yanks arrived, I work for ITN...I'll be going back in June and thank you for your lucky wishes...

"Bottom line: most Americans don't really have a stake in this and don't really understand how bad it is over here--not b/c the U.S. has failed, but b/c the Iraqi people have failed to step up."

I understand--Brother.

“That’s actually kind of funny kid”

Yes, it is, especially since you’ve even been there. And you’re quite welcome for the wishes.

God Bless your cousin. Thank God we have an Army and Marine Corps full of them.

I have been expecting higher casualties out of Diyala Province. AQ went to ground there after the Surge began. They are going to defend Baquba now that Al Anbar has gone hostile on them. Stryker units have gone up to root them out and exterminate them. The Diyala Campaign will take six months to fight. It will be toughest of the war.

But AQ will be exterminated.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

“Ah, but the question is which Iraqis do you want to hand it back to? The democratically-elected government that is in charge now, or the thugs with the suicide bombers?”

Short answer: who cares

the Pacific and Atlantic have been and will continue to be the U.S.’s single greatest strategic defense. Pull back, let the dogs eat themselves and just annex the oil fields

My youngest is fed up with them too. I have started to avoid the causality threads here. I can’t stand the bickering.

How about hitting IRAQ hard first?

Kill the jihadists wherever the breath. But Iran is the primary state sponsor behind this. And we're back to the old, pre-9/11 "they're at war with us, but we're not at war with them" way of thinking.

Who is "we" and "our" here? Go find the percentage of Americans who are actually involved in this war (as in, constant mortal danger).

Very low obviously. Of course there are those of us who worry about our friends and relatives while they are deployed, we aren't uninvolved.

Bottom line: most Americans don't really have a stake in this and don't really understand how bad it is over here--not b/c the U.S. has failed, but b/c the Iraqi people have failed to step up. They seriously, honestly want to keep on going slaughtering each other and us whenever they can. And you want us ("us" as in my Soldiers and I) to keep on going? Come on over and try it yourself.

If most Americans had a stake in it, what would you expect to happen? Serious question.

What do you think we should be doing as of this moment? I defer to your opinion, since you have the actual eyes on the situation.

It’s the ROE that is causing most of the problems. Because of that our troops are sitting ducks for an attack like the described.

When I was in the desert I posted an open letter to FR pleading for conservatives not to abandon our efforts. Everyone who replied promised not to-how things change.

I won’t abandon your efforts. I believe in the mission. My desire is that all who fight can do so unhampered by political correctness.

Bless you.

Yeah, but wait a minute Doug, just the other day British liberal Peter Hichtens wrote that Iran is not a threat to the west.

We all know British libs are so educated and well informed, so Iran can't possibly be sending all those bombs over to Iraq. (/sarc off)

If Iran is allowed to build a nuclear arsenal, that regime could ultimately make the Third Reich look like just a biker gang that went on a rampage for a few years. I know that you understand this, but I just want to make people more aware of the huge strategic threat from nuclear weapons in the hands of rouge terrorist states.
