Clip in military terms is exactly as you described.

In generic civilian terms, “clip” is often used as synonymous for “magazine,” just as “gun” is incorrectly used to described a firearm with a rifled barrel.

Only if "generic civilian terms" means the same thing as "ignorant dolt". Manufactures' catalogs containing references for spare parts for even the civilian weapons name them correctly. I'd say people should consult their Users' Manuals before they assume they have mastered the rather low-tech terminology of the trinkets they purchase.
